Can I use a letter to type a whole word? Like I can bind the letter 9 to say "the" and 8 to say a phrase like "went that way.?" Or can I change words into synonyms?

I really don't see how that could be considered cheating. The point of an essay is for you to think up which words to write and what order to put them in (there's probably a more elegant way to phrase that, but I can't think of one), the method you use to communicate it doesn't really matter.
