If you do anything dumb like sending multiple bomb threats then they will be able to find you. There is pretty much no way to be completely untrackable. It all depends on how badly and how much effort is put into tracing you.

There was a guy at UPitt who sent like 20 bomb threats one after the other. It made national news. Cops and FBI involved, traced emails to a VPN provider in Russia somehow. Traced various ISP logs for packets intended to this VPN and rooted it down to a coffee shop somewhere. Got a suspect on a security cam, identified him, some batshit crazy Asian kid with schizophrenia.
