i've been at my security guard job for 3 months. i hate it, and desperately want to quit and find another security guard company.
but i want to use my current job as a reference so i have a better chance of getting hired for a next job.
how long do i have to stay with this job before i can use them as a solid reference?

Yeah, your new employer may well think "why is this dude leaving after only three months", or they might just think "well hey, he's got some experience and we need someone, if we think he's got the right qualities then we'll take him"
How do you know until you do it?
Don't just wait some arbitrary amount of time because you're afraid of what others might think. That's fucking bullshit.
And, of course, don't quit this job until you've got a new one lined up, otherwise you'll be up shit creek without a paddle
