As much as I dislike 9fag for stealing deaf as fuck memes, watermarking everything and even using those memes for their profit, you gotta hand it to them for being "clever" enough to get smartphone generation.
Ibaum'sworld, ifunny, or funnyordie whatever the fuck similar pages that love to steal content from others has a very desktop feel to it. For new content you do had to click here and there. 9fag on the other hand was designed to be kept on scrolling, the most popular being presented first. This worked not only in advantage over desktop but also smartphones, people didn't need to click here and there but just scroll down.
Also because people are lazy and just dumb.

its all the popular internet culture and jokes streamlined onto a single page you can access.
I go on 9gag when my boss is giving a lecture cuz 4chan is blocked at our lecture hall. a lot of it is cringe, but its just a serise of jokes, nothing to get butt flustered over.
