Shedding this feeling that others are always trying to bring you down, or at least ceasing to care about it, is an important part of becoming successful. You have to be willing and able to work with pretty much anybody, regardless of personal inclination, because you cannot know where your next big breakthrough will come from.
As a result, you don't see very many successful people who espouse this idea of other people trying to bring you down. Even in cases where people clearly really ARE trying to bring you down, acting on that possibility will kill your success much more often than their efforts will.
