How do I get myself to stop caring so much about others?

I am far too empathetic of a person, to the point where I just care far too much about the comfort or convenience of even strangers, to the point where it will take significant time or convenience out of my day.

Is there anything I can read or any steps I can take to become become more self focused and not care so much about what others think of me?
