How fucked am I if I pick Spanish as a foreign language to study simply because I have a really close Hispanic friend? I don't really care about Hispanic culture/literature/whatever, but I'm a lazy person so I just want to pick one where I can learn new shit by chatting with someone. I'm from Australia btw.

Mexican-American m8 here. Spanish is not so difficult to learn. There is an app on the apple store that gives you an intro on German, Spanish, Portuguese, etc.

Honestly, you shouldn't do it for a friend but so you could add something to your life that makes you interesting. You know Spanish isn't just Hispanic culture, there is also Spain to take into account (which is why I like Spanish). It's very similar to English, so the difficulty is low but you still need to study and practice to get it engraved into your head.

I am not doing it "for" a friend. It's more like I want to learn a language with ease/little studying as I am lazy and having someone to practise with is good. I don't know anyone who speaks fluent French or whatever.

Get a job where you work around Mexicans all day. You keep an open mind and ask questions you'll be speaking Street Mexican in no time. Worked for me.
Shit Id be speaking tegalog by now if I still worked at one of my old jobs.
