I'm in my final year of uni, and I've been invited to a social thing with my course. Problem is I took a year out to work so I don't know any of them. I figured this would be a good solution to that, but I'm worried that if I go I'll have trouble making friends/joining in. It doesn't help that they're planning on going to a club after and I don't do that.
Anyone got tips for a social retard to survive, or should I stay home and play vidya instead?
Go. Try. Fail, or perhaps succeed. Reflect. Gain wisdom. Then you try again the next time it happens.
That is the process of learning a skill. No one is automatically good at something besides the naturally gifted and the savants. If you want to get better at being social, do it and suck at it, but continue to openly suck at it until you learn how to get better.
If against all odds, social skills still eluded you, you might be developmentally hindered. Anxiety, aspergers, autism, etc...

True. In the worst case I can just slink back out the door, no harm done, right?
I suppose the main thing I'm concerned about is knowing how to break into a conversation with people when everyone always goes off into their own groups at things like this.
