The theories of people like Esther Perel and Sue Johnson are really popular - they have some videos online you can watch and of course books etc.
That said, it isn't always a black and white choice like that - cheat, or break it off. There are many scenarios when cheating would be the kinder thing. A common example is if your spouse is in an accident and is financially and physically dependent on you, but incapable of sex. Should you go the rest of your life without sex, or tell them you're going to find a sexual partner outside your relationship, possibly devastating them, or discretely have an affair while continuing to love and support them? What is the right thing in that scenario?
