I'm moving to the night shift at my job. First time doing this but I'm not sure when I'm supposed to sleep.
My hours are 8pm to 5am. What time should I be sleeping? Before or after work?
Should I be sleeping until 7pm to then go to work at 8pm or should I be sleeping right after work?
Whenever best suits you friend. One thing I noticed working nightshift is how much I missed the sun. Its important to get some rays because it can negatively impact your mood. I would probably think about going to sleep a few hours after I get home so I can enjoy the afternoon when I wake up. But you will fall into a pattern that suits you best.
Sleeping a little in the morning and a little in the evening can be pretty great. Then you're up for lunch/sunshines midday.
Say, sleep 6am-11am, awake midday, nap 4p-7p. Depends on your commute to work, wash/dress/prep routine, etc.
Used to work 7pm until 8am. Here's how I did it... I tried to sleep as much as I could before going to work, but get up, have a nice meal, shower, then go. So i'd be awake around 5:25 (wasn't a long drive to work) I'd make dinner, eat, shower, make coffee, which I would bring in a thermos. I felt eating at work during the night made me feel sick, so I did light snacks and coffee only.
When I got home, i'd usually sit down and relax, but try not to fall asleep. Within a half hour I had sort of a second wind. I'd do what I needed for the day, errands and shit. Then I'd crash. Maybe say 10am or so. I'd wake up at some point, watch movies/game/dowhatever, then I'd have a "lunch" and crash again. I was always the most alert guy on my shift. My rule essentially was to try and get 6+ hours of sleep within each 24 hours. Also due to not eating at work, I slept during my breaks (used a timer) for a total of an hour and 20 minutes.
