I really need to mess up a hdd with windows XP. What is the easiest and fastest way without taking it out of the case.

Do you need to destroy data, physically destroy HDD or both?
If it's only data Hirens Boot CD had some software for that.

in the center on the back there is usually a steel disc to which there is connected a flat orange shellac cable with four wires. cut it with a razor blade in two spots so that a piece falls out and the drive is disabled.
Killdisk. Pentagon-level data destruction. Multiple formats and rewrites with garbage data

Put it in a garbage bag and smack it several times with a sledgehammer. Transfer some of the pieces to a second bag, drive one of them to a place with a public trash can, and throw it away. Repeat for the second bag, with a different public trash can.
