It obviously isn't that simple, because there are plenty of channels that have good content but are never noticed
1. Try to do something first.
- Try to do it well.
2. If you can't do it first, try and at least be in that group of people that do it first. Make something that separates yourself from the others though.
3. Be able to entertain.
At this point, it'd take a miracle for somebody to get noticed on youtube "big time". It's already becoming over saturated in so many aspects.

Luck, mostly, although there are things you can do to manage your odds. Produce content that appeals to a specific demographic, update regularly, videos shouldn't be too long. do whatever you can to meet/talk to people in whatever niche your videos are in; send out emails, go to conventions, getting a guest spot on some already famous youtube channel can be a huge shot in the arm.
but again, it's mostly luck. you'll probably fail.

Take something which other people are doing and then do a better job of it. People are already searching for the topic so you're more likely to be found. Because of the quality, you're also more likely to be shared. All in all there are more eyeballs for you to grab just because the content is presently relevant.
