If I buy an android phone on 4.4 KitKat now, will it still get mainstream (twitter/snapchat/whatsapp/chrome) app updates for 2 years?
4.1 stopped working all together for me. 4.2 still works quite well. that's all I can say. I remember, those came out a few years ago?

meh, think I'll just give it a miss, the uncertainty is bugging me now so it would if I got it. Shame, it's a cheap beast.
Cheap phones these days come with lollipop by default
You will get updates for the installed apps despite your current operating system. You are just running the risk that an app will not work because update xy will break the app on KitKat, but it's very unlikely.

Shod not be a problem. Also upgrading os to newer is also easy as pie.

Most products get OS updates for at least 3 years, and over 5 years on flagship models. Even then, you can usually go a year or two on an obsolete OS version and still get developer support, especially with mainstream apps.
