i feel like animation is one of those things you'd actually need some formal training on. of course, you can train yourself to be good at it if you're dedicated enough, but a school will give you all the resources, tech, training, and theory you need; especially if you go to a good school. good opportunity to meet other animators and network with others.
if you think you have proficient enough skills, you can try to apply to some local animation studios. you'll need a solid portfolio though.
i don't think the degree is necessary, but you should be able to work the programs and be able to draw on model at the very least.
I think you should try and hone your art and if that doesn't work out, see if there's something else you could do with your art like comic books or something along those lines
