Earlier today I took a dump and found blood in my shit along with some mucus. This isn't something new for me as I've hemorrhoids for years. I never bothered to go get checked because I find the idea of someone looking at or messing with my asshole less than thrilling, plus it didn't hurt or anything.
But today I lost enough blood to feel uncomfortable, though I can't tell if it was because of the amount of blood or the sight of it in the toilet. Anyway, I want to get checked in case there's something more sinister going on. I've been googling for over an hour now about causes and treatment of various possible issues but I can't find what kind of doctor I should see. All articles and entries mention "your doctor" as if there's some general ass-and-digestive-track doctor. The symptoms point to a variety of possible problems, almost each relevant to a different doctor specialty.
At least the blood is bright red which means the problem (if it's something other than hemorrhoids) isn't very high up the ass.
I'll keep searching but what kind of doctor do you guys think I should go to?

Much to my shame, I don't have a GP and I don't have regular check ups (or at all). I was raised with minimal medical attention and I was taught that if you ignore a problem it'll go away. Which worked for my parents, if you consider parenthood a burden.
Anyway, I don't think there's even GPs in my country, but I'll look into it, thanks.

No, nothing. I didn't make any drastic recent changes in my diet either. All I take is Depon for the headaches but very rarely. About two every three months or so. I'm not having any trouble defecating either. No strain and no feces hard enough to hurt anything on their way out.
Though all signs point to hemorrhoids (sitting on my ass all day, taking my time in the bathroom, anxiety, obesity, not much fiber in my diet, external hemorrhoid) I'm worried about wounds that could be infected, polyps and cancer.

don't do that, that's what caused my hemorrhoids. it went away with cream and taking no more than 5 min on the toilet. Are you wiping with paper? That also irritates it. Better wash it with bidet and fingers.

Usually yes I'm using paper, though sometimes I prefer using baby wipes. And I always wash after every dump.
I've been using the bathroom for tranquil contemplation since I can remember, but I'll try to cut down on the time.

I had that problem, doctor refereed me to a specialist straight away
they tested some feces and found I didn't have a infection which is the most common cause
so I got an ultrasound because they thought it might be a cancer, but it wasn't that either
so I got a test with a camera in the pooper, not really fun; but not that bad
apparently it's rare they do that
in the end they were like "we don't know what is causing it, but we've ruled out everything serious so you should just ignore it unless it changes"
and I was like "wat"

Make an appointment with any doctor. They will most likely refer you to a gastrointestinal doctor, who will likely give you a physical exam (yes, finger up the butt) and they will test it for blood. If they don't see hemorrhoids or blood with the finger test, they may order a colonoscopy. You may also have abdominal x rays to see your bowles. You may be constipated which can cause bleeding at times.
