so I just got fired because I kept missing shifts and being late/too early

I have serious trouble with managing time and dates, I couldn't read a clock till I was13, and not reliably till I was 16
I theoretically failed school based on attendance because I missed my classes and turned up in the wrong place for everything
I regularly miss special occasions, holidays, and get the days of the week mixed up more often than not

It's hard to describe exactly what the problem is, I'm not sure if there is an underlying issue or not, but it goes we beyond the realm of general disorganization

I've tried getting a calendar, whiteboard with rosters, alarms on my phone, but the difficulty keeping them up to date is just as bad as the trouble remembering without them

sounds like something weird enough that you will need professional help with. have you sought any?
>>
>>16616775
tried, but nobody seemed to have any answers

what makes it more of a puzzle is that I'm literate and numerate, often people with these issues suffer from a general cognitive impairment

so I could tell you what 120+50 is imediately, but if asked what time it would be in one and a half hours, if it's 12:30 now; I couldn't answer reliably
>>
>>16616789
there has to be someone that can help you professionally, I don't personally know any contacts that I can give you but there has to be help out there for people like you.

You should try your hardest to get control of your life, go to every mental health facility there is if you have to.
>>
>>16616772
hate to say it home boy but it's something you're just going to have to work at because it's an essential part of functioning as an adult. I got fired from a bank job because I couldn't wake up at 5:30 am everyday to open the bank, I was chronically late and eventually it caught up with me. looking back i realized it was because I was drinking too much, and not giving myself ample amounts of time to get a full nights sleep, and your case might be different, but any breathing normal adult can tell you 12:30 plus an hour and a half is 2:00

for me getting fired was a huge eye opener, that I had to take charge of my life if I ever wanted to go anywhere so in a way it was the best thing that ever happened to me

use this to your advantage, don't label yourself a fuck up because of it
>>
>>16616814
the trouble is most affordable mental health services only deal with very basic issues and simple techniques, and even then have mixed outcomes

there has been some speculation it's ADHD or autism related, but even if it was there seems to be no help available

when I'm looking for work I'm always stuck in the dielemma; tell my boss I have these problems so he/she doesn't think I just don't care
>>
>>16616836
my nigger I hear you, it's a do or die kind of deal

I'l put the work in to get better, but I'm not sure how
I can try harder, but the question is; what do I try harder?

when I have to try to manage even a few times events in a day, it causes me so much anxiety checking and re-checking timetables that it stops me functioning
>>
Seems like a whacky enough issue that your run-of-the-mill professional in the psych field won't really have much to tell you.

So you'll have to nig-rig something up to work.

The best thing I can think of at the moment is find a job that has nearly set-in-stone hours/shifts for you. Clearly something where you work different hours/days each week is NOT for you. Least, not currently.

I'm trying not to diminish the severity of your issue in my head, but it truly does not seem like something that cannot be compensated for.

Perhaps using military time would assist you. Instead of having A.M. and P.M., you just have raw numbers. Since you're clearly mentally competent, and you have no problem with sums or other basic math, maybe this will help. You say you couldn't really reckon what an hour and a half past 12:30 is.

But look at it this way, bud. You can add 120+50 just fine. Work out a concrete "formula" in your head that 1 hour=100 units. Fuck basing it on 60.

So say it is 2pm on standard time. You're looking at 1400 hours there. Instead of adding an hour onto 2pm, you add 100 onto 1400.

This doesn't seem like something you need expensive therapy for. Seems like you can figure out an accomodation you can make for yourself, to me.

If you get a job with hours set in stone, you should be far better off. You'll wake up and go to sleep at the same times each day; barring weekends or days off.

Tell me what you think about using military time.

I wish I had a blueprint but honestly it's something I still struggle with at times. I'll set two alarms for myself, and even test them just to make sure they're working and my phones not on vibrate or some shit, but don't overstress yourself either because that's also no healthy.

but I know what you're saying, sometimes when I know I only have 6 hours to sleep i'll toss and turn all night because i'm afraid I won't wake up for my shift

...i wish i could be more helpful
>>
>>16616772
Pretty sure you are autistic m8, just get on disability and be done with it

>but I know what you're saying, sometimes when I know I only have 6 hours to sleep i'll toss and turn all night because i'm afraid I won't wake up for my shift

That shit's the worst, dog. I'm usually working with 4 hours before I'm worried, but even sometimes with a full sleep cycle ahead of me, I'll toss n' turn because I'm nervous for the same reasons you are. Worse, I'll have mild nightmares and wake up every goddamn hour in a state of fugue, panicking to myself "OH FUCK I FORGOT TO WAKE UP SHIT SHIT IM FUCKED oh wait I just went to bed 1.5 hours ago FUCK SAKE ok time to do it again"

I don't want to hijack the thread, and I've replied to OP already a couple of times, but how hard is it to change someone's life? I need to change mine, and I just got my own eye opener. How hard is it from now on?

>>16616859
I do think you should always tell your potential employers about your issues. Try to get engaged in your community, meet as many people as you can, maybe you will find someone who knows someone...and keep looking for jobs, but be honest with potential employers

What a question! I'll do my best to provide my perspective.

Humans are terribly diverse critters, you know. Barring large advances in technology or spirituality, I will never know exactly what it is like to be you. And likewise, you'll never know exactly what it is like to be me. Therefore; such a question is impossible to universally answer. I'll try and fail, anyway.

My opinion is this; making a drastic life change can be extraordinarily difficult or surprisingly easy, depending on the method you take coupled with exactly the sort of person you are. That is, there are proper methods for you that are likely useless for me, and vice versa.

For life change that I have accomplished, I used emotions with negative connotations to achieve this end. I'll try to explain. It is very difficult, so bear with me. Might take me a minute or two to organize my head.

>>16616930
it's a daily battle for me at least. not sure what your situation is but when I got fired it was the worst morning of my life, and i'll do anything to not go through that again, that was my motivation anyways
>>
>>16616909
that is definitely not a good mind state to be in. for me I started working late shifts because at least now I know it would be almost impossible for me to oversleep. I guess I feel like I never fixed my problem but just found a way around it, because I know I can't do those early morning shifts. where do you work and what time do you have to be up usually?
>>
>>16616890
I can use 24h time, it is a bit easier, but not enough to outweigh having to convert everything from 12h time first

I used to work construction, same thing every day, I wasn't late once
sequences arn't hard to manage, nor is the height of the sun or the shift whistle
>>

Right. So here's an inadequate description of what I did, personally.

Previously in my life, my major issue is what most would call depression. I'm very loathe, especially now, to give my mental peculiarities proper clinical names like this.

I formed a narrative of conflict, of a fight between "myself" and those unhealthy mental processes inside me. I did not personify them, but I made them into a real entity. Something NOT intrinsic to me, but an invader to be evicted from the home of my mind. Like an exorcism of sorts. I found it extraordinarily useful to form a mental framework and narrative of conflict. Of myself VS that which I wanted to destroy inside myself. It has worked wonders!

In addition this, I found that harnessing "negative" emotions, mostly disgust and anger was very useful. You know that feeling when you grind your teeth really hard and get a nasty look on your face before you do something difficult or disgusting? That right there, directed at myself was very useful. Not self-hatred, but disgust at the position I allowed myself to be in. Real anger at myself.

Ah..it always sounds so pseudo-sciencey and abstract when I type it out. Please, ask me questions.

And remember, by asking me these questions you are doing me a service, as well as yourself. My purpose in this life can be (too simply) boiled down to an obligation or duty to help those of my species. So by reading what I write, and forcing me to improve my techniques or tips, you are helping me to perform my duty. So thank you.

I am currently switching quite frequently (about 50/50 in any given week) between 2nd shift from 3pm-11pm and 3rd shift at 11pm-7am. It isn't the best, but I don't find it terribly difficult. I've had some bit of insomnia since childhood, so I am used to working on little sleep. 4 hours treats me just fine.

In a couple weeks, I'll also have full-time classes to deal with as well as full-time work with rotating shifts! Gods be with me. But I'll get it done.

I'm quite disorganized by nature, but I don't have the real issues that the OP and others have outlined. Just trying to help....while I'm at work on the 3rd shift, lmao.

>>16616948
I reckon you are the OP? So we've determined that you must look for a job with very set-in-stone hours. That is the most immediate change you can make.
>>
go see an autism specialist.

casual work was a bad idea, but I needed the work

not only is my roster variable, it changes last minuit
>>
Definitely get a (digital) wristwatch. It might not be too much in your case if it's one of those that beeps every hour.
I also found it a bit helpful having a pocket notebook where I continuously write to do items the moment I think of them. Most likely won't do all of them but at least they would be sitting of something better than Disk B(rain) which is usually the shitiest hard drive
Also
>got fired because I kept missing shifts and being late/too early
Too early is never a bad thing so if you can/don't have anything else, get a book and just sit in the break room for 1 or 2 hours
>>
>>16616772
Use Google Calendar you neanderthal. Set alarms and put in your work schedule. Can you even tie your shoes?
>>
I can't tell the time and I'm dyslexic but I've managed to hold a job for 3 years and worked my way to a management position. You need to start rotaing your life. Set times inorder to do tasks. Start with household cleaning. Assign a time you start the task and time you finish the task. Keep at this for months until its habit.
>>
>>16616954
It's like what I used to do so that I won't get late. I'll make these 3-4 entities and play a competition with them! :P For getting ready for school - everything had to be accomplished with set goals and times, from brushing teeth, to the number of rinses, to poop time, to removing clothes, to the number of soap scrubs, to towelling all parts of the body, to putting on clothes and checking the bag for everything. Sometimes I'd win, sometimes, I'd lose cos I was taking too much time! :O
^_^ Yeah, I was cute!
