My answer would boil down to, it really is pretty great, just not -as- great as you imagine it to be as a guy. I went with OKCupid, which is a pretty good place to begin. Use great photos, don't get too personal or biographical (focus on your lifestyle instead), answer lots of those multiple choice questions and focus your messages on the recipient's sense of humor. Use proper grammar and mechanics all throughout.
Also try not to spend more than 10 minutes a day on this. That's more than enough time to scan through a few local matches and send out one or two decent messages. Just remember to keep things light. Fun and happiness drive first dates more than deep curiosity or connection. Those develop later.
