I just failed my first semester at college. I got into engineering school and tried my hardest, but I'm just not smart enough. I want to try a degree in history and teaching, but I'm afraid that people will just call me a quitter. My academic advisor thinks that I just "didn't apply myself", and I haven't told anyone yet. Any advice?
>>
Just fuck 'em, dude. You know that you can't do it, don't trudge through something you honeslty can't do.
>>
Waterloo?
just wait two semesters and come back and do it op
>>
You are not smart enough for college. I didn't apply myself in first year either. I got an A+ average. College isn't for everyone.

If you got into an engineering program, you were smart enough from the get go. So that means you didn't study enough, you fucked around and you didn't take college seriously.

So you have two choices:

Take that shit seriously and turn your situation around going forward

or

Drop out and get a shitty minimum wage job for a couple of years until you get the motivation to do well at school because you realize minimum wage fucking blows.

Well, if you've already resigned to the fact that you aren't smart enough then own up to it and change your major.

But. You are smart enough. You were able to get into the school in the first place so obviously someone thought you were capable.

What do you *really* want to do? Do you want to be a teacher? Do you want to be an engineer?

Either way, stick to it and do it.

I want to be an anesthesiologist. I just transferred over to a much harder university and failed my first O-Chem class (like a 19-on-a-test fail). Not only that, I have a C in Physics and a low A in Spanish.

My grandfather died this semester, it's my first semester, I wasn't prepared for the amount of studying and I didn't apply myself like I knew I could have.

I AM smart enough and I WILL be an anesthesiologist.

I'm retaking it next semester and I'm going to get a tutor for reinforcement. I WILL do better.

Just don't give up and don't let a failure fuck up your entire psyche. I'm not even kidding. You're going to be fine. Don't freak out. There is no rush. Take some time off, relax, readjust your priorities, plan/schedule and do what you want. Just do it well.

Eh OP it depends on what you want to do, here's my story for what its worth

>get into college with 3.0
>dont care at all about school
>drop gpa to a 2.2
>start caring because I need money
>graduate with a 3.0 in CS
>get nice paying job

A bad semester or two is by no means the end of the world OP. It will mean you take longer though, I took 6 years to graduate because of my dicking around.

Bad logic. He got in, said he failed his first semester DESPITE TRYING HARD ENOUGH.
>>
>>16563994
All he said was that he tried his hardest. That doesn't mean shit. His hardest could be playing LoL for 5 hours a day and studying twice a week for a couple of hours. Or it could be that he studied 5 hours a day, every day and for some fucked up reason couldn't regurgitate that knowledge. Which, if the latter is the case, means he's doing something really fucking wrong. Because it doesn't make sense at all. Which means he still is at fault at the end and did not seek out the proper guidance/resources along the way. A semester is 16 weeks. By week 5 you should know if you're fucking up or not. If OP didn't seek help or tips to correct his failure, he's doing college completely wrong.

I don't know your situation, but it's entirely possible that you didn't apply yourself. Engineering coursework isn't like a normalfig job or something, you shouldn't expect to be able to pass while putting in ~40 hrs a week.
>>

>OP opens up notepad/vim/whatever to work in
>opens up browser window
>does no work and just watches tv/porn/posts to 4chan
>wow have I really been working on this homework/studying for 5 hours? I need a break

and yes, I know of people who literally did this shit. They would open a book and play on their phone for 4 hours and then say "wow I studied for 4 hours today!!"

If it's the latter it could be a multitude of issues but not necessarily a lack of intelligence.

Stress, lack of sleep and depression are particularly hindering in regards to retaining information.

Some people study for hours on end and just cannot remember it.

I'd say that if this is the case, school counseling and a trip to a psychologist is necessary. There is a reason why these services are provided at universities, usually free of charge. Suicide rates amongst college students are particularly bad. It's the second leading cause of death for those between ages 25 and 34 and the third leading cause of death for those between 15 and 24.

White males under the age of 21 are at a higher risk.

Oh boy. Please regale us with stories about how hard young white males have it.

Not op, and didn't fuck up my semester AS badly, but how do I start changing my mindset to apply myself? I have a bit of an internet addiction I'm trying to kill, but even without that have a lot of trouble focusing while studying.

OP, this really hits close to home for me. I got into engineering school on excellent grades but wasn't able to find motivation despite my best efforts. Eventually dropped out, took some time off to get my shit together, then went and did a CS degree at another school. Took me 10 years to do my Bachelors but now I've graduated and am doing legit work in the tech industry.

Graduating from high school and getting into engineering school already makes you smart enough to do the work, there's no doubt about that. But there's a huge range of potential reasons why you aren't doing well:

1. You don't want to be an engineer and just went along with your parents'/teachers' wishes.
2. You're not good at getting grades in a college environment. You should be studying from past exams, trading notes with classmates and seniors, etc.
3. You're depressed because other areas of your life suck. E.g. living alone for the first time, no friends, homesick, shitty commute, etc.

Honestly, a lot of people (including myself) are just not mentally capable enough at 17/18 to slog through something like a tough engineering curriculum. If you have the resources, take some time off to travel or work and get some perspective. Companies don't care whether you got your degree at 22 or 24. Better to go into it at least having an idea of what you want rather than killing yourself getting a degree that you might not even want.

Close to 50% of all college students change their major at least once. It's not quitting, it's learning about yourself. Whether you discover that you don't have an aptitude for engineering or that you really are interested in history, it is a step forward, not back.

(Now, it would have been nice if you could have discovered that without flunking out, but put that behind you and move forward.)
>>
Do you have mental illness of any sort OP. I couldn't make it in engineering because depression.
>>
>>16564079
Out of the entire comment, that's what you got from it? It's not a political statement, it's a fact. Nothing more.

Please continue to anger yourself. Please.
