I was in many of the original threads on /co/
It started when folks started making threads on "Spooky waifus" and people were going nuts for Fangora Dracula, School for Vampires and Ghoul School gals.
Other gothy chicks started getting in there, but Creepy Susie just kinda cropped up and suddenly people started throwing ideas and writefagging back and forth.
Then the artists stepped in and the rest was history.

Yeah, the way I see it, I don't care about the Susie of the oblongs. I care about the Susie of the Herny. The guy basically gave her more character development than the show ever did and people fell in love with the neo-Susie that Herny had created. It's as if whenever you hear someone saying "I love creepy Susie" you know he's thinking about the Susies that Herny has drawn, rather the real one. Even the other artists that jumped the bandwagon and started drawing her usually are moved by Herny's version of her - ala They're drawing fanart of a fanart.
It's not always the case, but still, that's pretty much how things work when Herny comes up with a new waifu (see Luna and co).

He only draws her a bit more mature in age and personality but that is the case of many other fanartists and characters and people don't go this crazy over those artists.

That is a much better way to describe it. People aren't drawing and loving Creepy Susie. They are drawing and loving Herny's Susie and she really is a totally different character whenever he draws her, this "neo-Susie" as you like to call her, is merely Herny's OC at this point that is only recognizable as Susie because he keeps her skin, eyes and hair.
He transformed her into a goth girls fan's fap material and took all the Creepy away from Susie.

she's a character from a book by Angus Oblong called "Creepy Susie and 13 Other Tragic Tales for Troubled Children", good ol' collection of stories not actually for children that contain a lot of dark n cynical humor. Later, some characters from the book inspired the short-lived animated show "The Oblongs" on WB, and Susie was a character, though she rarely had more than one line per episode, but still she was great and now she had a voice which was also pretty cool. show's been cancelled for years but Angus Oblong said quite a while ago that he might revive it for a Halloween series finale all about Susie (halloween's her birthday) and would show her family on screen for the first time. Dunno if it'll ever happen but i'd say chances of it happening have gone up a good percent or 2 since Angus acknowledges that artists have been drawing the shit out of her recently.
People follow fads and if it gets shoved in their face enough by a handful of people they too will begin to "like" it, if only because they see other people liking it. I honestly doubt most people have developed any lasting affinity for any version of the character and will move on to the next popular thing. See: everything ever on 4chan.

Angus Oblong apparently said it himself, but the book contradicts it cause there's a line that says "susie's vagina tingled at the thought of Edward twinklbottom" so maybe he's fucking around. Also he said she can breathe fire, which i like a lot.
