L$ is in-game money, which must either be bought with real money, or earned from other users.
For a frame of reference...most of the dicks in this thread are 1400L, which is about 5 dollars USD. The male muscled male body that is seen a lot in this thread is 2800L / 10 USD. Id say theres a lot of benefit if you care what your avatar looks like. But as far as what you can actually do in the game, its pretty much the same for everyone. Keep in mind though that people will be much more willing to fuck you if your avatar looks good. If you know how to roleplay and emote, that will probably benefit you much more than anything else, though.
