He was saying that Lalah was far older than the women that Char usually dates.

From what I've seen of Japanese boards a lot of them seem to find it just as retarded.
But still just like in western fandom there are a lot of people that are satisfied with consuming something on a superficial level and so they think it's cool, has cool robots , cool robot battles, provides apt conclusion , and are simpleminded enough to accept the easily accessible cheesy love and understanding message it provides at face value and find it actually moving. It has a bunch of stuff people like a lot about UC compressed in two hours and if you don't think too hard the unpleasant parts are easy to ignore so what's not to like?

The movie had a very mixed reception when it was screened in the 80s.

It's 2016

The serious answer?

Char was separated from his mom at a young age and grew up and lived his life with a very small amount of people he trusted or cared for and the list basically consisted of himself and his sister. Then in comes Lala, who breaks through the barriers he set up around himself and is the first person he feels a connection to and he knows loves him unconditionally. She was someone who could love and support him in a way he felt nobody had since his own mother.

Plus he probably had a little bit of an Oedipus complex.

Or maybe they find it interesting in terms of direction and atmosphere and the emotional reaction it achieves and other things not related to 'muh writing' because

For the record I've not seen this movie, I'll probably watch the TV show and then read the new manga by the character designer with the really good art first. But generally that tends to be the reason why people enjoy stuff with meh-tier writing that pretentious wannabe literary critics who are too autistic to move away from anime ignore
>>
>>144357462
*because anime is not books
>>
>>144357176
The guy looks like Ozymandias from Watchmen.
>>
>>144349160
Char, mostly.
The better question is
>Why do people love this garbage character?

Char is awesome in 0079, but after that he becomes more than just a misguided-man-out-for-revenge, but a total twat with nonsensical ideas on top of his usual betrayals.
>>
>>144357937
Char never betrayed anyone in his life.

Who has the best release for CCA? EG?
Also can I watch it right after ZZ?
>>
>>144357462
>that tends to be the reason why people enjoy stuff with meh-tier writing that pretentious wannabe literary critics ignore
Really? My observations are that the general public just wants something fun while wannabe otaku like stuff with "great" visual direction and "atmosphere" and average "deep" writing.
CCA got a lukewarm reception on first screening. As I said it has just enough things that the typical robot fan would appreciate but at the same time too dense and weird to be really appealing.
As it happens both the writing and the direction
are brilliant but Tomino's style is too unusual and the movie format makes it extra odd.It actually garnered a lot of recognition in certain artistic circles.
Anno was probably the biggest fan of the movie. It's not a coincidence that exactly Anno of Eva fame was a fan of Tomino's and that he like Ideon and CCA so much.
Ideon deals with people who live under constant stress and fear of death (among other things).
CCA portrays people with deep emotional issues and deals with the connection between people, the distance between people and the desire for intimacy (among other things).
Both have a lot in common actually.
Their main strength is that Tomino is a very good psychologist and has an unique style of writing and direction that portrays human beings in a very visceral, naturalistic way that can invoke a strong emotional reaction if you know what to pay attention to.
It just worries me that a lot of people say
>Tomino's characters are just retarded
>Tomino doesn't know anything about actual human beings
Then they sprout simplistic opinions like
>>144356319
or much worse.
I would like to thing that those are just the vocal minority but I don't have a reason to be so optimistic.

>read the new manga by the character designer
The Origin? It's fun enough, I guess. Just have in mind that it is it's own thing and only provides an interpretation on the first series. Don't use it to as a guide to explain latter series.
>>
>>144356319
>Plus he probably had a little bit of an Oedipus complex.
He's in a fucking Tomino anime.
