Even though Mob does lose some fights and doesn't always exactly defeat his foes, he is definitely the strongest psychic we've seen so far barring maybe Claw's Boss.
And even then, he's way older and has had more time to store power than Mob. With ???%, Mob may be the strongest in the whole world. He doesn't necessarily always use his power to defeat his foes of course, but he is still at the very least the second strongest shown in the show.

What else are you supposed to judge a first episode on if you don't know the story of the source material?
You can only get a basic idea of the plot in the first 20 mins.

I think you're not giving it enough credit, Reigen isn't just deceptive, he's also kinda supportive of Mob and acts as guide. Also he has no power but still goes ahead and tries to fight ghosts in his own way with his ridiculous special moves, so not a complete coward.
You also get a real sense of Mob's inner struggle with his powers, there's the mysterious counter to his explosion, his failure in class and sports activities, even at home during dinner his powers are trouble.
Seems to me like the episode painted a very good starting picture.

Next episode will basically cover Mob's motives and have him crossdressing(with a small twist at the end).
