3gatsu's got great layout, but I'm not sure that'll translate to anime directly. Some of the spreads or single panels have nice layouts that can be easily transferred, sure, but there's a lot of stuff with the narration and overlapping/superimposed panels that seems like it'll need to be rethought revisually (although Shinbo's probably a good choice for the narration).

He doesn't even technically take credit, that's bullshit from people who don't bother checking things. He's typically credited as "chief director," with someone else as "director." He didn't invent this position, nor did he invent the practice of using both credits together as a way to just slap a famous name on something. He's probably the only person to ever use it so extensively, though.

Chief directors tend to have a lot of input in the case of Ishihara. He is there as a directive force I guess according to interviews. The same can't be said about Shinobu who's input seem to be very minimal according to interviews.

Oh, I wasn't saying every use of chief director is like that (half the time it's used there isn't even a "director" credited), just that it's been done by others before Shinbo. The main point, either way, is that he's being credited as director, not chief director, for 3-gatsu (and sole director, too, as far as I know), so there's no reason to believe he isn't actually involved.
