It's not Bernie's death that gets me, or the attempt at shoehorning in the tragic romance thing with Chris, or even the fact that Al just watched his friend die a meaningless death because he pressured him into a fight he couldn't win; It's that moment when Al starts crying during the moment of silence for the people lost in the war and the girl doesn't know what's wrong, and his friends drop this line and it suddenly becomes clear that Al's not just been traumatized, but he's got no friends who can even begin to understand what he went through and he's just stuck alone with his regret.
I expected the obvious asspull cliche ending ... didn't happened.

This is the one anime that is still affecting me now. I don't know if it's depression or just sadness because of it, but this anime did something profound to me. It's sad, but I can't help but feel happy for the characters in some small way.
They lived in hell but there were some beautiful and loving moments in all the darkness of the world they were in.

Don't know if that is season 1 or 2 but the death of the red king and the silver king's sacrifice was extremely sad in my opinion. Combine that with the sadness of the blue king and what his busty lieutenant says about the kings having followers but actually being alone and the whole episode became really depressing.
