Do you guys think Aqua is a good character, from a design point of view?
I've started to think she was designed from the start to be waifu material, and making a compelling character came second to that.
She's unique (being a goddess) which alone makes her attractive. Not to mention the almost mary-sue type power she has from the beginning.
She cries very easily, which I feel plays towards the cute and dependent girl archetype that guys are attracted to. While she's not totally helpless, she is swayed enough by the main character that his words alone can make her, a very powerful character, cry. It sounds cliche, but I feel like it's a popular character type because it just works.
She is very haughty and brash, though not in a totally bitchy way. Just enough to make her seem dominant. This seems to be attractive to a lot of less dominant guys, and I don't want to stereotype too much, but guys who watch anime may not be the most "alpha."
Then there's Mezume and Darkness. They're both well rounded characters, but with how sexual they turn in an instant, it feels like pandering as well.
I came out feeling like I enjoyed it the same way someone enjoys McDonalds.
