Optimal in what sense? Tabletop wise (such as in D&D) that is a bad idea seeing as you can use your turn to attack or have your animal attack, not both. And the animal itself doesn't scale well into late game. Its more preferable to take a monk who can simply keep dodging, a barbarian because they can even get shot by a cannon at lvl3 and barely notice it, or a paladin because they have good dmg and tanking capabilities as well as the ability to cast a basic heal spell as much as they want. Story wise, its okay of a choice, a paladin is usually still better imo.
