Starting off this week will be probably one of the quicker ones due to the simple fact there’s really not much on her when I search for her entire history online, so I’m going off memory with what I remember from watching Schwarzesmarken in the winter season. Because of the war-torn nature of the anime, most of the girls in the show while super pretty didn’t get a whole lot in terms of backstory and side scenes to get a real sense of what the characters are like when they’re not fighting for their lives.
Sylvia is a really hard nut to crack because the majority of her time in the anime is spend being extremely cold and distant to pretty much everyone in the entire show. She admits as well that the only reason she’s in this war and works together with her squadmates is to ensure her own survival, which is super interesting when you think about it, a very realistic representation of what many felt by joining the military during major wars. She was convinced that being close to the military was safer than being a defenseless civilian.
The hard part now with Sylvia is identifying how she might be if she existed in a modern day society where she’s not fighting to stay alive. I can’t really say much more, so here’s my call on Sylvia:

Though Beatrix wants Irisdina all to herself for unknown reasons (probably to personally torture or rape her). The remaining forces are being split up, presumably to die in battles they can’t handle. Lise meanwhile is viciously interrogating Thi-Rang, it’s not pretty and even the other stasi are horrified.

Axmann during the destruction of the library claims she will be the one to lead the country. Turns out Axmann was taking his orders from Beatrix the whole time. Guess she responsible for everything after all. She's quite the scheming bitch.
>During the battle, Katia (now Ursula) is making a speech to all of Germany, interrupting all transmissions. She reveals that Irisdina told her that her brother was killed because of his plans to destroy Beatrix and the stasi. Sylvia takes a blow for Annete and is killed. FUCK BEATRIX DEAD WITH A RUSTY SPOON!!! Before the end, we’re back to Theodor and Beatrix’s battle. Finally, Theodor lands a good hit and they both crash into a building below. FUCKING FINALLY!!! The sound of her cockpit getting destroyed by Theo was like music to my ears! There's some bullshit from her about Theo coming to regret his decision as she dies. Yeah right bitch! You're responsible for everything to begin with!

Schwarzesmarken is a show set in the Muv-Luv universe; an alternate reality where humans fight giant aliens as much as each other. Humanity fights back the best way they know how in anime, with giant robots. This story takes place in East Germany during the Cold War, after an alien invasion that started in Central Asia hits Europe. The government of East Germany takes drastic measures to crack down on any dissidents, meaning that both humans and aliens are seen as enemies. This should be a way to inject some intrigue into a show about mechs and girls in bodysuits, and if the writing is any good, that’s what it will turn out to be.
Of course, for Schwarzesmarken to be enjoyable the cast needs to be good, or at least not a bunch of obnoxious jerks. And sadly, that is one area where this show falls well short of the mark. Theodor Eberbach, the main character and only main guy who has a chance of surviving more than an episode, is an absolute prick. He treats a girl who is having PTSD flashbacks like she’s a horrible burden in the first episode, leading to another pilot being killed. Also, he’s unpleasant to everyone in the show until he knows they are on his side in plotting against the government. Sure, he has a sad backstory about his family being kidnapped and/or killed that eventually gets revealed. But, a smart show would lead with that so it’s understandable why he’s such a jerk to everyone. That way, his first impression to the audience isn’t that he’s an asshole. Then there’s the commanding officer of Theodor’s unit, who is also cold and mean to everyone she meets, a description which fits pretty much everyone in the unit. The only exception is the new girl who shows up from West Germany. She’s kind to her new squadmates, but she feels too naive to actually be a soldier. For a group of soldiers in an elite unit, they don’t feel like they would work together well as a unit, seeing as they all seem to detest each other. And to be honest, I can’t blame them.

The other major issue is that this show is as subtle as a bear attack. It’s one thing for the unit to be named the 666th Squadron, that’s silly and edgy but it could be set to the side. That is, if the show didn’t actually mention that it’s the number of the beast in dialogue. No, Schwarzesmarken, I get why you called them that. I don’t need it explained to me. Then there are the two villains, a smug and utterly detestable male-female duo, who belong to an agency that do the dirty work for the East German government. They are introduced executing a bunch of captives who have their hands behind their backs, making it incredibly obvious that they’re bad guys who do bad things while wearing vaguely Nazi-esque uniforms, all the while twirling their figurative mustaches and smiling maniacally as the blood pooled around the bodies. Surprise, surprise, they hate our heroes for no reason at all other then that's what villains do, and drop by to harass them. I’m not asking for everything to be various shades of grey here, but there are already aliens rampaging across Europe trying to literally devour humanity. I don’t see any need for more purely sinister bad guys in a show like this.
So, what I’m left with in Schwarzesmarken are two groups of people I don’t really like and don’t want to root for. I guess that means I’m rooting for the aliens to win and kill everyone. And it’s not a good sign for a show when I’m rooting for everyone to die. But, it’s not like I give a damn about anyone in this show. The only character I could possibly like had so many death flags that it was barely a surprise when he bit it in the closing minutes of the episode in which he appeared. That I could predict his death due to the lazy writing is bad enough. That I’m left with nothing but unpleasant characters to go back to means there is zero chance I’m watching any more of this garbage. It’s an obvious fail.

Im definitely not as into Schwarzesmarken as I was total eclipse… It doesn’t feel the same, i can’t explain why… like it still revolves around that nationalist feeling, but it feels like the politics are smothering the damn thing. Like i’m all for unclear lines and complications in conflict because of political interests that stop them from just fighting the BETA, but idk… it seems like there’s just a lot of paranoid talking and OH SHIT THE STASI… to the point where the BETA don’t even feel like a serious threat…. TO THE POINT WHERE I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW ANYONE DIES TO A BETA WHEN THEY LITERALLY WIPE OUT THOUSANDS OF THEM WITH NO PROBLEM UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS
idk… The script isnt even that compelling and there isnt a single character that I don’t see as a typical military mecha drone…
