Serena is essentially a stalker. She saw Ash on TV, then seeing how a brief childhood crush was now famous, she set out to meet with him. She spent a huge part of the XY series tagging along without any goals of her own. She's made herself into a cheerleader and who had cheerleaders? Gary Fucking Oak. Does Ash want to be Gary, surrounded by vapid admirers? No, he wants to become Greninja.
