Why is it so rare for shows to have anything more than 24 episodes these days? Wouldn't stuff like CG animation and computer assisted drawing make it less expensive to make anime, allowing for more episodes to a series compared to back in the 80's and 90's?

anime became advertisement for LNs and Manga

In japan people buy LN/Mange volumes of animes they liked.

Fewer episodes is a good thing. It gives them less time to fuck everything up.

What about original animations like Mayoiga or Kiznaiver?

Aren't Macross Delta and Kuromukuro 26 episodes?

I reckon its because studios like to diversify their shows. With a shrunken market, you're actually taking a bigger risk. if you produce one 50 episode show that fails, you might tank the studio. But producing a 12 episode show that fails is okay, you can just make up for it on the next show.

Macros is also an established franchise with a good string of popular series under its belt.

What do you mean, "shrunken market"?

What was it that allowed so many lengthy shows to be created in 80's and 90's without such a large risk of financial failure? What changed?

It's not rare.
There's no less than there ever was, there's just more 1-cour shows.
Plus, it's less of a financial risk.

Wasn't thst spear furry show 39?

Anime was always an advertisement for LN, manga and cheap toys.

Don't sell most of the times

Less saturated market. Chances were you were one of the two or three providing for a certain genre back then.

that depends on how many assets you need. some CGDCT school club anime that needs about 4 different locations and 5 characters with signature clothing can benefit from CG.

Something that changes locations frequently, has a large cast which diverse and changing outfits on the other hand will be difficult to make.

Of course it can still be used in a smart manner, e.g. on recurring mechanical objects (read: mecha, spaceships) or recurring locations. Or for main characters when they are in their signature/combat outfit while using traditional methods when they're wearing something else. The latter requires that the CG does match to the 2D style well, if you fuck that up people will complain.

>and computer assisted drawing
We already have that. Coloring, lighting, effects and compositing are all done on the PC.

industry was smaller back then. there werent 50 new shows each season. something like urusei yatsura would run for 300 episodes if it was popular. if anything the industry takes more risks today by adapting less popular works instead of milking the easy sells

1. Bubble economy
2. Japan used to have an absolute fuck load of young people in the 70s through the early 90s. It's why they're rapidly aging now.
3. Fewer studios then, less conservative business practices.
4. VAs didn't command insane amounts of money they do today.
