The dark turn of events that played with the reader's expectations was fine, but I really disliked how the manga lazily tried to amp the tragedy by including their backstories right before they were killed/incapacitated. It fucked up the flow of the story and I would have rather seen them do some initial training outside of the dungeon/cave that would have gone into their backstories, just to play more on the feeling of a group getting ready for an adventure.
It's nice that this was just an edgy opening and that there will eventually a more stable group for goblin slayer and shitty white mage to hang out with.

The first mistake was fighting in a cave.
Humans aren't good at melee. Especially not against multiple targets where even if you greatly out skill your enemy, you can easily get fucked when fighting multiples.
With equal training and equipment, we're always better at range. It's much safer.
Stay at the cave entrance, try to smoke them out or wait in ambush. Stick to ranged attacks only. If you must melee, use "range" melee like pole weapons. If you can do so from behind a shield, even better.
This applies even to fantasy settings. Humans hunted out or out hunted "monstrous" creatures with nothing but teamwork, determination and our unparalleled ability to attack from a distance.

The rest of party desperately try to fight against the monster. GS drinks heal and stamina potions. He tells Elf that he has a plan and charges at the ogre while everyone else covers him. Ogre tries to cast his fire magic again, but nothing happens.
Ogre realizes something's wrong as he feels his body's been thrust back, then he sees the lower half of his body away from him. He realizes that he's been chopped in half. As he tries to comprehend what is going on, he notices the smell of seawater in the hall.
It turns out GS has used a "Gate" scroll that's connected to the bottom of the ocean, and the high-pressure seawater burst split the ogre in half. Everyone is surprised that GS's used an extremely precious scroll with no hesitation, and not for escaping but attacking.
As Ogre screams in fear and agony, he recalls GS's words upon their encounter - "What? He's not a goblin?". So he's prepared something like this just for hunting goblins?! The ogre thinks. As GS readies to kill ogre, he tells ogre that goblins are more troublesome.

GS says he will give his life too but realizes his death will sadden Cow Girl, so he takes it back and says it seems his life is not at his discretion.
After a brief but intense standoff where Lancer confirms GS's determination, he tells GS that he doesn't care about the guy's life and asks for a beer as a reward. He punches GS and voices his annoyance that a Silver-level like himself is going to hunt goblins (Lancer is the strongest guy around the area).

As for the Steel-level adventurers, their story is briefly told at the start of Chapter 4 in the LN.The banquet had come to an end after three days and nights, and the goblins were more than satisfied. In the great hall filled with foul stench and corpses, there were four new quarries. They were four females - humans, elf and hobbit (called "レーア" in the story, but the kanji is 圃人 which is "hobito"). They were not your average village girls. It was clear from their bodies that they were well-trained. They were all Steel-level adventurers.
How did it come to this? Was the last thing that crossed the mind of the party leader, a noblewoman.
Was it that bad they indignantly came to rescue the kidnapped girls? They picked the time when goblins were asleep and stealthily infiltrated the area. They weren't careless. The mountain stronghold was a maze that adventurers had yet to set foot in. That's why they couldn't afford carelessness. They prepared as much as they could in the small village. They knew they were going to be outnumbered. As the leader, she fronted the party with her sword and shield, followed by the hobbit ranger who scouted the surroundings. The elf mage had her spells ready and the human cleric with her miracles in the rear. They carefully and slowly explored the area. So where did it all go wrong?

Mage in the center, protected by the leader, ranger and cleric. Hardly an iron defense, but nonetheless a very solid formation. But, they were outnumbered. To put it simply, they were overwhelmed by the sheer number of goblins.
The ranger had a natural gift with the bow, but she could not shoot down enemies that outnumbered her arrows.
The mage impressively cast four or five spells, but she was already exhausted.
The cleric's miracles and blessings, were useless when she could not pray.
And the leader who fought on, could not swing her sword any longer as fatigue caught up. The goblins pulled her down. The hunt was over.

So of course, the goblins would not mourn the deaths of their fallen ones. But the rage and hatred of seeing their kin killed, would forever stay with them.
