It would make no sense if it ended there, since he has the ability to return from death. Also the light novel it's based on hasn't ended yet.

Because, in order to have a satisfying, unsatisfying ending, you need to tie up enough loose ends and complete a character arc so that the story has a reason to exist in the first place.

I generally agree with you OP. Don't care if it's edgy, happy endings are contrived 99% of the time, when a bitter or at least bittersweet ending would have been more powerful.

Still wouldn't make much sense here though, we haven't even gotten all the relevant information yet.

To write a Bad End to something requires a hell of a lot more work than a Good End. People will generally accept contrived bullshit allowing for a happy ending because it doesn't really matter at the end, and they just want to feel good. With a Bad End, people are forced to think about the story, and that means you have to put in a lot of work to make it actually good.
