They are casually talking, and Aqua starts trying to convey her gratitude towards Kazuma for bringing her to the world and all their experiences.

As for Darkness, I get the feeling this chapter sealed in stone that she'd accepted her crush on Kazuma wasn't going anywhere. The fight those two had was really reminiscent of the shenanigans Kazuma gets up to with Aqua, which hilariously enough is basically the best possible thing you could say about Kazuma's relation with someone.
There was a lot of focus on how much she's grown as a person despite seeming mostly the same from the outside too. I'd go as far as to say that this chapter was the conclusion to her entire character arc, making her the first protagonist to reach the finish line.

Felt the same way. The author seems to be pushing Megumin as the main romantic interest since she's been getting the most scenes so far. Kazuma points out in this very chapter how much more comfortable Darkness has gotten with him. And it's not like he doesn't like shameless whores!
My take on the whole thing was:
Volume 3: Darkness' actual character is introduced, It's established that she has zero interest in your classic fairytale prince, and that Kazuma is exactly the sort of guy she'd want.
Volume 4: We get our first real glimpse at Lalatina. Not much beyond that, this was mostly an Aqua volume.
Volume 5: It's spelled out that Darkness does not view Kazuma in a romantic light, she only likes how much of a scumbag he can be. Again, not much of her here since it's Megumin's big volume.
Volume 6: Part 1 of The Darkness Show. She is almost entirely Lalatina in this volume, and we get a really good glimpse of how she's struggling over whether "Lalatina" or "Darkness" is the real her. Kazuma's casual response of "who gives a shit, people act differently in different situations. That's just how it works" along with his actions in the last chapter severely bump him up in her eyes.
Volume 7: Part 2. Darkness submits herself to a marriage that, at the beginning of the series, she would've been overjoyed with. The fact that she's decidedly not is highlighted. her noble personality is more fleshed out, as is how much she honestly does care for her family. Kazuma throwing away his fortune to rescue her is basically all her wildest fantasies come to life, so she finally falls for him hard.
Volume 8: Part 3. Darkness and Lalatina have started bleeding into each other, mostly because the people of Axel are so familiar with Darkness by now that they could never be afraid of her. Darkness is aware that Megumin is also in love with Kazuma, and in her usual noble way she decides to step aside. She tries to put her feelings to rest once and for all in the bedroom scene, but screws up because she's real bad at this. She's kind of set up as the group's babysitter by the end of the volume, too.

And Volume 9: The End.
Now that Megumin is clearly getting ready for her big confession, Darkness confronts Kazuma one last time about the whole thing. As Kazuma specifically points out, this time she doesn't run away midway through. Instead it just turns into comedic hijinks, which when you're talking about Kazuma is pretty much the epitome of "they're friends".

I don't know. I feel the whole reason Kazuma has never made an actual move on her is partly because she is a shameless whore. He also calls her a dumb bitch, which is one of the reasons he could never see Aqua as the main heroine. I'm sure it also doesn't help that she is always fantasizing about get captured and raped, which no man wants from their woman.
I think when you're discussing Darkness, it's also important to look at Eris. She has a similar "two personalities" thing going on, but in her case it's very obviously the same person just speaking in two different ways.
Darkness is a devout Eris follower, so it's pretty fitting that her big development is reconciling her "personalities" into a similar combination. She even does something similar to Eris' tone swapping while talking to Kazuma this chapter.
