it's supposed to be secondary to the main plot in each episode. early on you get the idea that spike is just a rugged individualist who cares about no one but himself, but as the show progresses you get more and more glimpses into his past, each revealing that he has more depth than at glance. the ending is fantastic because he finally shows his true nature and reveals how much he cares for her.
