He duels and wins way too much, has a very inconsistent relationship with Yuushou (Going from REEEEEE to dueling as his proper student in 10 episodes. Just to ask am I the only one that thinks Arc-V in general had rotten luck? Earlier you can tell they were trying to set things up and build better developments until in the end they had to scrap most of those ideas and rush things along the way.

Arc-V: Possibly the best start in a YGO series to date and it goes slowly downhill after the first arc

It had everything going for it and they completely shit on it because Ono is a lazy ass. Proper character development? important character relationships? well paced plot? It's the second half of 5D's all over again, go only knows how much fucking around we did with the WRGP arc, shitty character of the day episodes and the Ghosts before we finally got a legitimate plot duel to deal with placido. Everybody became a fucking parody of themselves and so one note you can describe them all in less then 10 words. The worst part is they have people on staff who wrote the worst parts of GX and Zexal making it an unholy fusion of pure dragged out crap and the duel choreographer obviously isn't used to having so many options that a character can half now with all the summoning methods being used. Odd Eyes Rebellion Dragon, Enlightenment Paladin and Nirvana High Paladin all feel like cards Yuya has out of obligation to the plot rather than stuff he can use naturally. The only monsters he really has been able to use like that are his 3 fucking fusion monsters all of them are the easiest monsters he can make along with yuto's Dark Rebellion while he has to jump through hoops to make.

You know what, I think I may have been too harsh on Zexal. I think it actually did treat it's characters better over time. I started thinking about the early part of Arc-V and all those fun characters who we don't see ever again and even the Lancers are rarely in one place (in fact they haven't been since they were first assembled). I mean, even if they really didn't do the best with those characters at all, Zexal's characters all had their role in the show and they generally remembered who everybody in the side cast was. (the exception being Anna)
Hell, I think Zexal even treated Yuma's rivals better than Arc-V is doing right now. Reiji is literally who tier and let's not even get into the one-off side bosses like Sergey and Edo.
In terms of something I recognize to compare it to, I used to think going from Zexal to Arc-V was like going from Kamen Rider Wizard to Gaim, but now I think it's more like going from Den-O to Kiva.

Anzu is just "girl in a shounen series", Asuka is completely irrelevant to GX as a whole and Kotori is fucking garbage who can't duel and just existed for shipping. This leaves only "Benchwarmer" Aki and "I'm relevant, right?" Yuzu and between the two, I have to give it to Aki because she at least had a very satisfying character arc she went through before getting lobotomized. Yuzu had all the promise in the world and just keeps getting degraded

You need to note that HEROES are one of Kaz's favourite types of cards hence why GX was full of them and they still see play and get support to this day.
Cyber Dragons are basically mecha Blue-eyes.dek and were famous for the OTKs yet Ryo barely got any relevance in GX when compared to Manjoume who was a mess of bad decks.
Then came 5ds with Blackwings which were not only popular but were able to win worlds and top several tournaments and this was what made Crow replace Aki since sex cults were costing money and crazy girls and romance subplots don't make as much as competitive trading cards so Konami took the easy route.
The same with Infernities, they looped forever and Kiryu got his own filler arc.
Then Zexal had Trains and Hands yet that emperor and Anna are barely relevant.
Cards don't always decide screen time. It's the circumstances the writers were under.

Girag made the first 10 eps fucking miserable. The barian fetch quest after vector was dull and completely killed the momentum that came before and felt like a huge stall tactic while the writers abruptly decided to figure out where to go next. Dong thousand was the worst villain in the franchise, even worse than fucking darkness. They hype up the barians for an ep or two at the start of the arc, and then the barians fuck around for 40 eps before they remember "oh, we're the villains" and slaughter the whole supporting cast in like 5 eps.
It's a fucking mess of an arc that's only remotely saved by Nasch, the Arclights, and Vector.

Come on now, the staff simply failed to plan the story properly. The show was really ambitious in its start that 150 episodes was not going to be enough, then they probably got scared they wouldn't be able to finish the story properly so they shortened it but then realized that 150 episodes was too much so they had to pad it out unnecessarily long synchro arc and xyz filler. The only thing I will grant you is a decrease in animation quality because the movie took the best animators Gallop had, but that doesn't affect good directing and writing. I won't doubt Ono and Kamishiro have some ability but it's more like they dug a hole too deep and they fucked themselves so now they don't give a fuck anymore.

It's a shame really how much any character who isn't one of the Yu's has turned into jobbers.
