>*Pun based on the yojijukugo “猪突猛進” (“Chototsu Moushin” – to rush recklessly into something with no consideration, i.e. like a wild boar). The kanji by themselves are something like boar + thrust + fierce (or blindness in another version of the yojijukugo) + advance, but the start and end pair are also two words in their own right, “recklessness” and “rushing headlong” or thereabouts. Here the third kanji is replaced with “農” (“agriculture”), so take it as something like “Recklessly gardening, like a boar”.
K then.

because google translate is garbage and can't interpret the correct phrases to use 住む in
it would be odd to use は with that verb in most contexts, so google takes the safe route and picks が
the reason why it's more natural to use が is because 住む is a verb that naturally raises questions (where is he living?) so without those answers, it fits better with が for the nuances that you probably heard about from tae kim

here's where you would use が and where you would use は
赤の広場にはレーニンが住んでいる
レーニンは赤の広場に住んでいる
as you can see が is used when lenin is not the topic of the larger statement
like i mentioned, without the 赤の広場, and without other outside context (like something that could be contrasted against with は), が is the particle that looks better to google

it did manage to interpret your third sentence pretty well though
you can figure the reason it uses は is because it reads better as a sentence that starts with a clear topic
hell it even added the 続く for emphasis

according to my research you will learn japanese at about 1020 per second (mach 4) watching ten episodes a day of anime (subbed)
raw anime brings it up by k*n/c where n is your current knowledge of japanese, c is the average complexity of the language used in each episode, and k is the constant of proportionality

For some people, hobbies go in and out of focus, and at any given time there are ones where you're making progress and ones where you're dormant or even regressing.
If you manage to at least maintain your Japanese learning habit, consider yourself well off. You'd be able to dial up your efforts at any time in the future.

Okay so this is my situation, some of you may remember me anyway.

I had some examinations taken for a scholarship to do my undergrad in Japan, out of the 40 people that applied I was the only one who passed. So 95% sure I'm going to Japan, just need to wait for an answer from Japan in november-december. The thing is I did study a lot of vocab and can speak with my japanese friends comfortably (Except I have to search like 40% of vocab they use on the dictionary from time to time), and I want to return to my studies, but now focus on the writing part of kanji too.

The trip is in april 2017, and I get to study japanese in a language school over there for 1 year (alongside math phys and chem) and need to be able to reach N2-N1 level in that time period, while being able to handwrite kanji. The question is, how can I get a headstart? I am only working 8 hours per day now that I'm no longer studying for the test, so I have a lot of time.

I'm 1200 words into core2k-6k (old one, started last year) and I have the RTK book but I don't like it so much (got it as a gift).

Any advice? If this is not an appropiate question please delete it, thanks.
>>
If I'm never going to write kanji by hand, am I doing unnecessary work doing production (keyword + reading -> kanji) on KanjiDamage? I don't write the kanji down, I just do it in my head, thinking of what radicals make it up and where they are.
Or does doing production have a positive effect on recognition?

Third paragraph is probably interesting to you. If you're already at a stage where you can kind of converse, the best way to learn will be to just read (and listen) a lot. Set yourself a goal, like finish 20~ VNs by then of which a couple should include harder ones like Dies Irae and Muramasa. If you can manage that then N1 shouldn't be a problem.
>>
>>143538639
I just learnt the radicals through rote and by writing them heaps. It's pretty effective
>>
>>143538830
I see, thanks. So I should mine vocab from VN's and practice rote writing? (or maybe give another shot at RTK)

Also, is there a guide anywhere to set up VN's?

Here's how I do it, it's not the most convenient but I find that to be a good thing actually, if you get too much handholding like sentence parsing and furigana, you will just become used to it and stuff will be harder to remember:

Noobie here.

Are all of these just different readings, or are they something I'm too new for and shouldn't worry about?
>>
>>143551142
You shouldn't just memorize random readings of kanji, learn them in the context of actual words.
>>
>>143551142
Don't worry about readings until you encounter words that use those readings
>>
>>143551142
The ones on the last row are name readings and not something you should prioritize.
>>
>>143551822
You need to know 5-10 name readings per kanji for all of jouyou and jinmeiyou in order to be fluent in Japanese
>>
>>143551884
yeah me too thanks
>>
Is the anon that downloaded all those audiobooks around? If so, are they too big to upload? They'd be nice to have in the CoR
>>
>>143551884
There's a point of diminishing returns long before you start memorizing name readings for completeness.
Even a Kanji sage who could chicken-scratch circles around the finest scribes of the Qing and Edo courts, would run into trouble figuring out names, because a given spelling for a name maps to several different pronunciations which are all valid names.
Some names have literally dozens of known pronunciations, and you're not going to impress anyone or move any conversation along by being able to list the different possibilities.
The key to fluency with names is remembering them when they are revealed to you, and having enough experience with names to make reasonable deductions about an unknown name, or flat-out recognize it if it's well-known in its context.

I've seen that most people start reading once they finish TK. How far into Anki were you guys when you started reading?
>>
>>143556208
You can start reading as soon as you want, and especially long before finishing Tae Kim
Just the essential section is enough to read Hanahira for example, and even the whole guide isn't enough to know all the grammar in regular reading. It's not some "beyond this grammar is just the obscure stuff" sorta deal
I started reading Hanahira 200 or 300 words into core and honestly didn't have to look up a huge amount of words, not more than I look up for harder VNs nowadays anyway
>>
>>143556394

So is a lot of it just getting used to the grammar and going slowly through it? I can deal with that I think.
>>
>>143551142

No, there are only 2 readings you need to learn for this kanji: http://ichi.moe/cl/kanji/?q=五

The ones at the bottom of your card are probably readings for personal names, which are pretty much useless.

I haven't read it but there's no way Hanahira doesn't constantly use stuff in the Special Expressions section.

Do you think it will somehow be easier to learn kanji readings than vocab readings?
>>
>>143565143

I actually begun kanji first vocab after because not knowing the kanji was holding me back.

For example I learned 海 and 岸 and knew that together it meant seashore, but it felt fucking retarded knowing the meaning but not the way it was read in Japanese so I was stuck reading half Japanese half English in my head, which is fucking stupid.

I should probably just start over my kanji shit after all and try to make somewhat of an effort this time.
>>
>>143565256
No, learning on and kun readings is a total waste of time, just learn how to read the vocab. Learning the readings in context with your vocab is better than learning 15 readings per kanji and 1543603 different rules and exceptions. Just because the kanji give you an idea of what the words should mean doesn't mean that you shouldn't have to put effort into remembering how to say it, it sounds like your problem is not studying the readings of your vocab hard enough because you can guess the meanings from Kanji.

well, this gives me a little bit of hope, I guess since I completely skipped them and I'm about 1100 kanji into my deck

should I just learn individual vocab meanings, then? I'm pretty early into my vocab deck and learning stuff like 空く (あく)、 空 (そら) 空く (すく) has been pretty easy and straightforward so far because I already know the kanji and know what it means.
>>
>>143565462
Yes
You can also replace "br" with your country code (br is for Brazil so it retrieves data from the Brazilian servers)

You can learn readings via vocab, i would argue it's actually better that way considering how many different readings some kanji have. I started with vocab right away but had very shit retention because i was having too much trouble remembering the kanji itself, let alone the readings. Then i did RTK in about 3 months (not learning the readings) and restarted with vocab after that, my retention skyrocketed and remembering the reading doesn't seem to be much of a problem.

You know what kun readings are, right?

Hint: They're literally entire japanese words.

It's literally wrong to learn them isolated from their specific individual meaning like you do with kanji decks.

Actually, the original text was flawed and probably made by an ESL and I was making fun of it.
The comma before the "and" means the fucking italian part is a separate clause from the learning english part and hence the meaning can't carry over the way it was presumably intended to.

Wrong. Full oxford comma usage is actually correct here. The only problem with what he wrote was the confusing usage of "fucking" as an adverb in a list that previously tied gerunds to actions.
