This guy is wrong >>143480269 which only confuses the asker >>143480366.

This guy >>143480262 answers better, but let's add details.

In classical Japanese you have verb forms that are no longer distinguished in modern Japanese.

For example the 終止形 vs. 連体形. Simply put 終止形 is the form at the end of sentences, 連体形 is the form in clauses. For most verbs these were the same, and similar to modern dictionary form, e.g. 食ぶ, 食ふ, 云ふ, 見ゆ etc. (Put in the simplest for possible, it's the form ending in -u when writting in romaji.)

Only few examples exist where these forms are different. Verbs なり, たり, あり and 侍り (はべり) have 終止形 that ends in the -i line.

Even in periods when difference was recognized, sentences were sometimes ended in 連体形, which was a sort of "soft ending". Like you'd now end a sentence with three dots, if you will... Since for most verbs both forms are the same, ultimately ending sentences with 連体形 prevailed.

For the sentence in question, なり is the revelant verb. It simply means である/です and is written as 也. So なる is its 連体形. 全能なるわれら then becomes 全能であるわれら. Or in modern terms 全能のわれら, since 全能 is tied to nouns with の. This guy >>143480262 is right though, that modern な is a changed version of the なる I'm explaining now.

And at the end of the sentence you can see なり in its 終止形.

(Bonus: It's debatable is the concept of "sentences" applies to classical Japanese, but it's easier to understand everything with them.)
>>
>>143483980
Best to just go through Tae Kim first, learn a little vocab along he way as well but don't focus too much on it. Then once you finish or aren ear finishing being more focus to vocab, after studying that for a bit then see if you can understand books.

At least that's my plan, on Adjectives there atm but that's because I"m literally writing down the whole thing in a journal because I feel it helps me learn. If you think something else will work better though then go for it.
>>
>>143482163

That guy probably took it from whiny ass. I'm the retard doing an anti kanji deck (meaning, kun and on'yomi and some jukugo) with nothing else on the side, meaning even after learning 1000 kanji I still can't read jack because I'm not doing any vocab or grammar.

I'm reading this now.
http://www.imabi.net/l335manyogana.htm

Very interesting. I admit I only gave a cursory check to Man'yougana, cause it's ultimately not needed for studying many of Old Japanese works, but he makes some interesting points.

Like:
>Watabe gives the character 君 meaning “you” as an example of why purely phonetic spellings with no meaning were necessary. In his opinion, 君 (you) could be read as kimi, anata, or omae because they were all words for “you”. As a result, writers would have devised phonetic spellings to disambiguate readings. According to Watabe, the spellings 岐美, 吉民, and 伎美 were created with no semantic relation to the word kimi. Looking at the first spelling 岐美, the characters literally mean “crossroads of beauty”. People referred to with kimi at the time had divine roles.

>So, in light of the actual meaning of kimi, 岐美 may be thought of as a reasonable artistic spelling of the word. In the second spelling, 吉民 literally means “fortunate citizen”, which can be viewed as a reasonable artistic spelling of kimi focusing on the wealthy status of the individual. The third spelling伎美 literally means “skill and beauty”, which may also be viewed as a qualification of the majestic role of someone referred to with kimi. Thus, these three spellings demonstrate that the meanings of these characters may not have been ignored in phonetic spelling but may have been taken into account for semantic play.

It's not wrong or anything, but it just bugs me when I hear people talk like that because they definitely picked up from a manga or a movie and use it to sound cooler or something. Then again, even a lot of native Japanese males do it for that same reason because you gotta put up that tough front, right? It's like the elementary school boys who say stuff like "何言ってんだおめェ? 俺はなぁ。。。" They sound so ridiculous, but kids will be kids.

It's like if somebody who is studying English but still sounds like a beginner would say "Yo, what's up, man?" Anyway, I'm just ranting because I'm bored. If you want to use it, go ahead.

>>
>>143488172
It is natural, technically. There's nothing wrong with it in a grammatical sense or in the context of mother tongue.

However, being a foreigner who speaks like that, you will inevitably be asked by somebody if you learned your Japanese from manga or video games because it's not a proper way of speaking that is taught in any textbook or classroom.

It's just all up to you. Just keep in mind that even some Japanese people don't like guys who talk like that because it makes them sound like "tryhards" who want to sound masculine or tough. It just all depends on the person or context.

What I said earlier was largely my opinion, but I know that my wife feels the same way.

if you look up "Japanese graded readers" you should be able to find a series of books that have picture book+audio. the books are pretty expensive to buy physically

I'm trying to start thinking in forming sentences and such, do these two have the same meaning?

私を行為させる
(do (some)act) (me)

私に行為させる
(do (some)act) (to me)

And when it's with a verb, would it be the same?

私が殴させる
(me) (to beat) (allow it)

私を殴させる
(allow to beat) (me)

私に殴させる
(allow to beat) (to me) [same meaning as above?]

Basically I'm in doubt when it's a verb/word and I want to express (do something) (to or towards) (someone), do I use を or に depending on what?
>>

Native Japanese speakers have retarded ideas as to the ways gaijin should speak. I've seen people who have insisted that gaijin should never ever speak in anything other than 丁寧語 at all times. Fuck 'em. (sorry for my use of 'em there, hope I don't come off as a try-hard!)

>>
>see translated page from manga that I've read raw

This is why you should take a more liberal approach to translating. You're going to lose the original Japanese feel no matter what you do, so you might as well take the route that will simulate the energy of the Japanese text.
>>
>>143490981
Why even bother translating, just make shit up that fits the pictures and if you have excess speech bubbles just edit them out and draw some dicks in their place or something

I think that would probably be pretty hard for a beginner, but anything would be hard when you're just starting off, you could pick one of the easier recommended VNs like hanahira or flyable heart, and you'd have less of a hard time, but you might be able to deal with tobira, it really depends how much motivation you have to keep pushing forward
>>
>>143494174
I used textbooks only for about a year.
>>
>>143494114
>I reached the point I don't have many problem with grammar

Why are you lying? If you actually learned enough grammar to "not have many problems", you wouldn't have a problems with reading and the language being SOV.

Why does everyone in DJT lie like this?
>I reached the point I don't have many problem with grammar
>>
>>143494174
You've already used a textbook, you said you're almost finish with Japanese the manga way, you can't just keep reading grammar guides forever, gotta start reading jap shit at some point, it's the best way to revise grammar and you won't improve much until you start
>>
>>143494135
because I'm getting frustrated. It's been almost six months I reached this point, and still I can only read few pages time. Truth be told, I don't read every day, but I didn't have this problem when I learnt English or Spanish.
>>
>>143494230
It's just that some people talk about using genki or whatever else, and I was wondering if I should delay reading for something like that first.

>gotta start reading jap shit at some point
But yeah, you're ultimately right. It's probably better to learn Japanese more naturally through reading anyway.
>>
>>143494341
Well take it from me, I spent fucking ages reading grammar guides, because I was always convinced I didn't have enough of a grasp of grammar, I read all of the manga way, tae kim, genki, and a lot of the DoJG, but ultimately it was completely unnecessary to waste so much time doing so

Reading Japanese shit for the first time always feels impossible no matter how much preparation you do with grammar guides and shit, I really just think it's better to get right into reading straight away, even if it feels like it's impossible, and to just keep looking up the grammar and vocabulary that you see when and where you see it

It's really hard, but it's gunna be hard no matter what, so it's better to just get right into it so that you can start improving asap, you improve a hell of a lot faster from reading native material than you do from reading grammar guides trust me, just try not to get demotivated from how hard it feels

that's ok if you understand it means you won't learn japanese

just the fact that you're even bothering with that kinda gives me the impression you don't understand how slow your own progress is though

to put it in perspective it took me two weeks to get through all of the grammar extravaganza while it's taken you two months to get through less than half of it

yes, most serious japanese is actually written using only half of each kana, this is referred to as 'half width' kana

That's what planning ahead is for, anon.
I've survived the animu hobby without Japanese knowledge for almost 10 years now.
And I won't need my Japanese skills for anything important for at least 5 years.

My goal for 2016, which I set up in 2015, was to finish Core 6k. Anything else is a plus. And everything is going according to keikaku so far. I'll finish this year in 黒字.

If you equal "serious" to "urgent" or "number one priority", then yeah, I'm not serious about learning Japanese.

I'm doing it in bite-sized chunks and taking advantage of long-term exposure, letting it soak in as I go. If you don't understand this concept, you're probably a monolingual who's going out of your ignorance cave for the first time. It's natural to feel full of yourself when you're not used to anything past your own shadow.

There are plenty of words like that in ANKI, so I end up studying them - karakara, betabeta, pekopeko, gabugabu...

Otherwise I might have ended up ignoring them.
But while I believe they're pretty informal, it seems to me they are not as childish as you are picturing.

They are mainly used for situations that are not very serious in nature, so the tone is not that off.

Think of someone saying "a wooshing noise", or using words like squiggly, mishmash and hocuspocus.

Oh, I see.
I can speak only about my own experience - I thought they were childish and wouldn't have picked them on my own.
Your theory might be right!

As for the hardship of guessing what they refer to, it's really bothersome sometimes, but a lot of them make sense.
For instance, karakara (dry/thirsty) shares the ka with kawaku and kansou.

Others I try to make mnemonics. Pekopeko (hungry) is that eats-everything bird from Ragnarok, Perapera (fluent) sounds like "waitwait" in my native language, which is something we'd say for a fluent person talking too fast.

What I really hate are words like sukkari, sukkiri, kikkaku, sekkachi and whatnot, those look way more confusing without any kanji to help.

For "context" it's also often more important to give the preceding/following sentence than to try to explain the plot or some shit. Studying manga and anime like a textbook does indeed sound silly and a bit baffling, but some folks do exactly that. A quick internet search will reveal there are a few diligent otakus out there who have taken the time to meticulously dissect entire episodes learning every single new word and grammar form. As dedicated as they may be, many will ultimately be defeated by this task after days or weeks or months of this insanity. Surely there must be another way, but how else could one study an anime? What would it look like?
