I not think it's for money, much less love the genre.
A hentai manga artist can draw an attractive way and have the potential to become a professional, but it is difficult to make a story that has the potential to leave a genre that already gives you profits

You have a strict month/weekly schedule, you have to meet with your editors, have to continue/cut their stories on other's orders. Not to mention that the competition is everywhere.
Sure self publishing is a gamble, but if you make it then you have it made in both workload and money.
