KS isn't really overrated. For a project that everyone involved worked on for free it turned out way better than one would expect.
Though, imagine the story brought to life by a real studio to be sold for money, it could have been the best VN ever made.
Also: I don't see it getting that much praise outside of the niche circle of people knowing 4chan.yes I am a faggot

Reddit fell in love with it as soon as it came out. Within 48 hours or so of launch practically the entire internet had heard about it.

I agree that Steins; Gate is somewhat overrated and it has a few cliche, but I wouldn't call it mediocre. It has bestgirl Mayuri after all.. I'd say Fate/Stay Night is way more overrated.
