20d6*1.5 for a level 9 spell is bad, this is also only at around level 20 you would even be able to do that. You could do it by level 15 with arch mage but, even then you would need level 17 to empower it, and reguardless it is still a bad option. At level 17 you will not do enough damage to one shot anything near your level with that. Also don't forget they get a save for half damage.

I think it's like this, the Adventurer class has to learn a skill at a percentage rate penalty to the native class.
For an Archwizard
Basic Magic = 1
Intermediate = 20
Advanced = 30
Explosion = 50
For an Adventurer
Basic Magic 1+(50%) 1.5 rounded down to 1
Intermediate 20 + (50%) = 30
Advanced = 30 + (50%) = 45
Explosion = 50 + (50%) = 75
So cheap skills are still cheap, but if he wanted to learn something like Explosion it would take him longer to get the required points. He also requires someone to teach him the abilities, they aren't inherent to his class.
Or maybe the skill points always cost the same but the adventurer class has such shitty stat gains that it's why not many people choose it - because it's the Kimahri of classes. Kazuma is the weakest member of his party after all, and not just because he's the lowest level. He has less stamina and strength than the wizard of his party.
