NowMWpointed out that if you notice, and let's be honest we're autists so of course we did, this scene where he takes on Keith at the end is pretty much a mimic of when he fought Bogue on Voldor with the sides switched. However, I notice nobody has mentioned that it parallels with that fight because unlike Bogue where he misses on purpose, Hayate clearly goes for the kill and intentionally hits the wing and cockpit. I mean, obviously he only managed to take it out of action but this shows his willingness to take further steps now

A lot of Kanamessa fans were pretty butthurt by the episode after he died and Hayate taking over his Siegfried and I think a bunch of them did stop following the show. It's going to be pretty bad if they do that with the main triangle without working on Mirage's development enough.

Really? it was pretty popular back then when the show started.
I can only think two instances Freyja would lose and none is about Hayate loving Mirage over her. She would lose if:
1) There's no triangle resolution so nobody wins.
2) Her development requires her to fall out love of Hayate or discover it wasn't 'real love', so Hayate would just settle with silver medal (like with Misa and Hikaru). I say this because so far everyone's characterization serves as prop to Freyja and, on a lesser degree, Hayate.
I don't think she'll lose because Kawamori seems to be subverting original Macross relationships. I can explain more if you want.

I was rewatching earlier episodes and there's actually quite a bit of subtle, silent characterization with Mikumo. It's mostly in regards to her view on Freyja. But she actually starts out really hopefull, then the first time Freyja doesn't pull out good values, she looks sad rather than bored/dissappointed and then finally when she repeatedly does poorly she's sighing loudly as if say "pull it together, you" to herself. She definately had a long, mostly siilent arc with Freyja from the start, then finally when Freyja dives in this episode, she's positively beaming with pride.

You don't need to watch the previous Macross series to enjoy and understand Delta. However you might not get certain small references and homages. They don't have no impact to the story but gives older fans something to reminisce. I would recommend you watch the original tv series Super Dimensional Fortress Macross then its movie retelling "Do You Remember Love?" to know the origin. The tv series has outdated and has a lot "quality" animation. The movie though has far better animation and art.

The first show is the most important in a way. 36 episodes. It has a great movie retelling in DYRL, that I wouldn't say is valid alternative (they go hand in hand rather even if they contradict each other) but if you're strapped for time its better to watch DYRL only, than just skipping the original.
Plus is nicely animated, short and pretty self contained. It gets referenced a fair bit visually, but plotwise, it doesn't have much relevance other than "why aren't Earthlings using armed drones more".
Seven is a big time sink, its got the same length as a Gundam TV show (50ish eps), and some oavs and a short movie. It's relevance for Delta is showing a spiritual predecessor to Walkure, in another time and place for another purpose. Walkure seems way less outlandish when you consider they were formed in a world where Macross 7 happened.
Macross Zero is short, and shock full of protoculture lore connections that are touched upon in both Frontier and Delta. It's 5 episodes only, so go ahead and watch it.
Frontier is the closest in time to Delta and it touches upon a lot things pertaining to Walkure and fold waves and purple crystals that that react to these. You'll feel much less confused what is up with Hayate's pendant if you saw Frontier. Standard 26 episode series and 2 movies to chug through.
