Re:Zero might be able to inch over the line since it's only had 5 days compared to seven for the others and seems to still be charting but I doubt it. GuP kind of ate this seasons sales. It's like over 200,000 just for the movie alone and about 10K at least for the older BD's versus...that mess. The thing is all of these shows had event tickets and some even some pretty massive advertising campaigns and that's what it amounts too. Time for a new business model.

Haifuri is almost already off the chart and it's store front event ticket offer expires at the end of the first week. I maybe see it gaining like another 2K tops. Re:Zero still has episodes and it's been the most explosively growing show in terms of popularity among buying otaku so I can see it having a strong second week. It's also the only show on that list of note that got released later in the week so all the more reason it's second week numbers are probably going to be a bit stronger. A storefront effect of about 1000 is not too surprising considering the event ticket offer that only kicked in last Friday and all the different benefits across the stores. I've seen Aniplex shows double their estimates before like Charlotte cause of storefront only benefits and personally had it pegged at about 7K first week minimum cause of this. I actually expected everything here to be at least a thousand higher and in Kabaneri's case maybe even double what it sold. Really tough look for the late night anime industry right now.

It has a storefront event ticket thing which seems like some sort of outdoor recording session for a Haifuri Radio show. You have to buy it from a designated anime shop and then you get a ticket postcard you mail in to get the actual pass. Why are people surprised. It's the show that Aniplex put all of it's marketing power into this season and is catching the runoff from the GuP buzz by having a lot of the same staff and marketing this fact. Also that's pretty shit for how popular the genre is right now. Arpeggio of Blue Steel did like double that first week with a fraction of the advertising and merchandising push. Pretty sure same with Strike Witches. Kancolle did like 3 times that and the show was panned by it's own fans. Dare I even mention Girls und Panzer.

Funny thing is Japan considers Haifuri's predecessor Vivid Red Operation and not GuP or Kancolle. Not really. Aside from Kabaneri which was a high price item that wasn't properly accounted for and Bungou Stray Dogs which has fujoshi buyers and a retardedly heavy storefront effect as a result everything else was well within normal margins of error. Those are really the only surprises for opposite reasons as I was expecting more for Kabaneri and a lot less for Bungou. I've seen seasons where it's just been way more off like Fall 2014. That was the season I figured it just completely shit itself forever but it's been pretty close lately. It's never going to factor in storefront but if you know what to expect you can usually guess the adjustment.

Gundam Seed Destiny had like 19 volumes and was an unbroken 50 episode run of about 70K average. The thing about Monogatari series is it doesn't actually have the same average over the same volume count, it's mainly because Bakemonogatari was only a 7 volume series that it has that 10K edge in averages since it didn't have to count the next 12 volumes where it dipped.
Anyway people who only look at averages are morons. Shaft is incapable of producing a 50 episode series and running it for a year straight anyway though.

This really hasn't been a good look season for Aniplex and it's crazy marketing campaign schemes. They might end up with a couple shows in the top four sellers again but considering the goals they were aiming for (New GuP tier franchise, new Attack on Titan Tier franchise that will impress Amazon) and the ad money and resources sunk into their shows it's barely amounted to all that much more than a Re:Zero, Jojo Adaptation or Bungou Stray Dogs. Did Bungou Stray Dogs even have an ad campaign?

Yeah the company honestly mystifies me with it's cram a bunch of big names that worked on a hit once into a show at a third rate studio every season, give it only 12 episodes and then neglect to give a fuck about it and expect the next big hit to come about. They still seem to think they found a magic formula with Madoka Magica but they haven't and should just go back to doing things like they used to in the 2000's when we got shows like Gurren Lagann, FMA and Darker Than Black out of them. Less Kiznaiver's, Kabaneri's and Ace Attorney animes.
The problem with Haifuri isn't it's lackluster dick sales compared to Gup or even Arpeggio of Blue Steel but the fact that it launched with like 500 pieces of pretty premium priced merchandise in anticipation of a monster hit that has to now be moved and it's just not big enough a franchise to have demand meet the supply. They might be able to find a way to move a little of it but it's a battle of attrition at this point.

For the most part much of Spring anime are anime that has been told and executed relatively the same as before. But at the same time when we do get something "unique" like Joker Game even that flops. At this point you cant cater to the pandering otakus because they are bored of the same old, and you cant even sell to those who want a story. Anime industry as a whole is in a confusing place.

I love the borderline irony of the fact that Osomatsu basically rips on modern anime and figured it wouldn't be popular at all coming out of a 60's paradigm. And yeah even Japan noted that Spring was a season of top billed shows that are basically reductions of other popular things from a few years back. Somehow the anime industry feels stuck in 2011 yet unaware of the reasons and conditions as to why things went well for a lot of shows at the top of the decade and how to recapture what went right during that period.
Anyway yeah I feel this is the end result of that big long term bet the industry made on light novels and the same old shitty staff over and over again for it's future. The only one really to stay almost completely out of that paradigm has been Bandai Visual with few exceptions like Accel World and Horizon and then they jumped ship from doing LN adaptations at just the right time. Isekai stories seem to still do well enough at least, but I have this funny feeling of a third SAO season that doesn't even crack 10K average being a real possibility.

Kyoani are keeping it safe by keeping everything in house. They are skilled in what they do and know how to keep the profit all in their hands. It doesn't make them big but atleast they don't depend on anyone.
Production I.G works similar to Sunrise except they give their own studios more freedom. But in general the pressure to succeed is far higher than that of Sunrise.
Toei has all the connections to get the big mainstream titles and so they will never die. They have zero freedom to do anything else though.

I think F is more like an exception to the Macross franchise. For one thing, it had a shit load more music than all the previous other series. SDF has Minmei just singing that Little Whit Dragon song most of the time and then got OBOETEIMASUKA for the movie. M7 had Basara and Mylene singing HEY EVERYBODY for 40+ episodes. Meanwhile, Sheryl alone had so many damn singles within like half the episode count of M7.

The advantage that Kabaneri has is that it's only 3 volumes. Even with a drop it'll surely manage to sell better than Re:Zero (9 volumes) and maybe Haifuri.
