Yea it was really fun at the beginning.
The end was also fun when it went into human / animal role reversal. I remember one girl being kept as a pet and humans riding a conveyor belt to be vivisected.

There's good and bad trainwrecks though. And there's badly written manga. But Gantz is neither of those things so why do people complain? Because it went off-track?

Not at all. In fact, I think it only gets better after the Buddha mission and continues to get better until the final arc of the whole manga, which is pretty much shit.
