The series has a narrative style that focuses on building the setting constantly. You can argue that the text/image ratio is shit but compare that to similar manga and its about par for the course. I've always though HxH was wordy but I think its probably that wordy detail oriented type of story that people want.
Like Hisoka v. Chrollo was all both of them being smooth as fuck while trying to kill each other and explaining their various gambits.
Then there's a whole chapter that is basically Hisoka acting smug even though he lost.

It was a great way of showing how Chrollo juggles between abilities and knows their strengths/weaknesses. It showed how he can mislead his opponent and how good he is at strategizing even on the fly.
