I ritualistically save my watching of Anne Happy for after work so I'm a bit late, but that was absolutely 10/10 masterpiece tier. I have achieved happylightenment.
It's a little corny to have her explain it, but I felt so vindicated when Anne straight up stated her view of herself as the luckiest and happiest. There's just a million fucking things I could talk about from that last episode, a lot of which underlies why the show was so good throughout the run. Like think about this for a moment, Hibari is a female character with a love interest who underwent a character development arc completely unrelated to her romantic interest. The feelings that changed for her were her perceptions of her self. It's not the most gripping thing in the world, but this is embedded in a fucking moe cute girls doing unlucky things comedy.
There better be no fucking Botan haters left. She proved once again that she can carry the team.

I think the Bozu episode is probably the most singularly emotional episode and sells the sappy happiness at the end for the highest price (if you count the ED+OP ultra happy finale a cheap shot that relies on the total sum of the season's work for its impact), but those other two episodes just have so much symbolic density, narrative complexity, and ideological depth that I might have to consider Anne Happy the most intelligently constructed show of all time. That's how happy I am.
But then again, the Ren-Hibiki backstory episode was one of the most adorable things I have ever seen. The photo assignment was also an immensely high quality episode.
I mean there were what, two episodes that weren't 10/10? Dice game and field trip. I could see festival getting disapproval. It doesn't fucking matter. How can one show be so good?

Ne ne, you all noticed Hibiki didn't get lost because she had made a decision to find her friends, right? Her tsundere brush off of saying she wanted to avoid the dangerous area was the part that became lost, while her true intention to find her friends led her to them in order to contribute to saving the day. It all comes back to how her true misfortune is rooted in her inability to be true to her feelings.
I just can't express how happy this show made me. If I had to teach a class on anime or happiness, this show would be the course material.

From a narrative perspective I actually find it god damn amazing how much the finale weaved everything together into a nice happy basket of friendship. There's so many subtle callbacks and really clear points that show just how much the girls have grown not only as people but as friends.
I'm not sure if I'm giving this show too much credit but the writer's blood in me finds it exemplary in terms of story-telling. Like one of the best examples in using a simple premise and just god damn going ham in its execution.

I think I'm losing it as well because the more I try to recall various episodes in the show and the finale itself, the more minute details keep popping up that just keep strengthening the show's cohesiveness as a story.

If you haven't done it yet, rewatch the first episode up to the point where Hibari meets Anne and pay careful attention to the shading. I didn't notice it the first time, but this show was packed with exquisite detail pretty much from 00:00. The highest level episodes are really fucking masterpieces. I'm pretty sure you could write multiple thesis level analyses of this show.
I don't even know what it'd be like to have a background in fine arts or to know Nip. I can't imagine how many high level perceptual tricks are worked into the visuals beyond the ones my rudimentary knowledge can spot or how interesting the word choice and other such language dependent aspects could prove to be.

Director is Shin Oonuma who was former Shaft before making Silver Link and directing Baka to Test (whose visuals reminds me of Anne Happy).

Oh god don't remind me. Though that being said, he actually did the same shit he did in PPD with the eyecatches here.
A lot of the shit in PPD, especially the blackboard parts, were intentionally left blank so he and Shinbo just sort of told the staff to fill it in with whatever and go ham. In the same way, a recent interview also confirmed that he sort of just had a vague idea with what the eyecatches were about and just left it to the the rest of the animators at SL to do whatever they want with it and have fun. Also, most of the lines during the eyecatches were almost all ad-libs by the VAs as well.

I'd say Hibari pretty much without doubt. Anne didn't really change other than acquiring friends, whereas Hibari developed a bit as a character. With that sort of argument in mind though, Hibiki might have undergone more development. For instance, at the climax there, Hibiki's decision to find her friends overrode losing her way. By comparison, Hibari's inability to accept herself didn't play into the rescue effort so much as all of the things that happened allowed her to move forward a bit. You could say that she overcame her doubt when she resolutely told Anne not to let go, but I think that's lacking some of the punch that Hibiki's development has.

Exactly! In the finale, Hibiki activated true friendship mode and got to sleep with Ren that very night. Another interesting note, of course, is that she comes out of Ren's house in the morning in the anti-epilogue. At first glance it's just a repetition of her going over to meet Ren, but there isn't a scene showing her go over. What if she had been there in the morning already, if you know what I mean? Hibiki rushed over to Botan ahead of Ren showing that she found her in need rather than getting lost. Their relationship has progressed to the next stage of happiness.

I can't get excited enough about her to do so. I don't dislike her, but most of her characterization was very on the level since she was the sort of MC. There are little bits of interesting things, like the way in which her troubles hinge on self-doubt, but that's ultimately the answer every time. She's a silent Botan in a way. How her shame in the cooking episode is handled is still an amazing fucking setup with the alternate teacher providing an antagonistic lens through which to understand why she would feel shame before the immensely heartwarming and natural sleepover remedy. I think that's my favorite part of the series directly relating to Hibari. I think the eccentricity of the other characters interests me more. Except for Botan, she's a one trick pony for me with her gloomy girl act being the true cause of her gloomy girl aura even to the point of making the audience annoyed with her presence in the early episodes when that is the only part of her character. That shit makes my brain melt. She's stronk and can carry the team though.

Hibari is more or less the unhappiest character in the show. I don't think there's much more to analyze considering the anime pretty much goes out of its way to show you how much she has improved her sense of self-worth.
I mean, a lot of anons already surmised the fact that her love for the construction sign is just a consequence of her own inherent larger and more negative personality flaws but that's about it. That being said, I really like the idea that Botan's sickliness is psychosomatic more than half the time. There's a case to be made here but I'm too lazy to go on an autistic rant about it.

Actually no fuck that. Botan has tons of interesting stuff in the later episodes. Just the little gag with her having already donned the robber mask towel was such a concise chuckle and really accentuates how she was developed. When she is in a positive mood, she is just a courageous, happy-go-lucky girl. Hibari was too self-conscious (not that Anne spazzing out about it helped), but Botan just did it and rolled with it. The fucking eyecatches for all of that were cute as hell too.

I pretty much agree with everything you said.
The shamefur dispray cooking episode blew my mind, because from a logical standpoint the teacher was in the right, and Hibari actually had a reason to feel ashamed of fucking up that badly.
And Botan was really annoying in some episodes, there were some bits where her self deprecation legitimately ruined the mood.
However, as the show progressed, she also proved that she cares about her friendship with the others more than anything else, and actually tried her best to not be a deadweight for the team anymore.
Despite only being able to treat her own physical wounds, in the end she really was capable of taking care of everyone in her own way.

Following Botan's development is probably one of my favorite parts in the show. Mostly because her genuinely annoying personality at the start contrasted so much with how much of a go-getter she was probably by the episode 7 mark and it only went up from there. It was incredibly endearing to finally see her take initiative in the shit she did and still try so hard despite her weak body.
The VR episode especially when she was the first one to jump in front of Hanako just had me smiling from ear to ear.
