So, I just watched the last 4 episodes that I neglected to finish, and I can't say I'm at all dissatisfied with how it ended.

My best guess is that the village does it's own upkeep? People can only enter or leave under certain circumstances, so I don't think Nanakimura is an actual geographical location. I think the biggest problem with the series was not how it was ultimately pretty dumb, but how it betrayed all the expectations it built.
At first it really seemed horror, but it quite never was. At first it seemed mystery, but in the end all the motivations were really shit and most of the "mysteries" revolved around inner logic of some supernatural elements. Not only was that missing the "complexity" most people want with mystery, but it also made the series less scary as you get to exactly know what the monster is and it doesn't represent unknown anymore.
This series was compared lot to Silent Hill 2, and at the end of the day I can say the comparison is pretty much a spot on, as they both deal with same sort of message and almost identical supernatural entity. As I started to think what SH2 did right and Mayoiga wrong, I think the answer is simple: just make the fist episodes represent the series as a whole better.
First make sure that it's clear the series is going to have supernatural elements. Second, make sure that it's absolutely clear it's going to be a story focusing on the characters and not the overall mystery: this was especially poorly done, as every dialog characters had was focused around different mysteries, maybe because the episode limit the plot had to move on, but built even more expectations of the core mystery being actually more relevant.If you're really making a VN make a note of these easy fixes.
