Watching this right now, just finished episode 16, Why is it so goddamn bad? Does it get better?
Maybe the manga is worth reading?

My one complaint with the manga is how difficult the action scenes are hard to tell sometime.

Didn't it take 12 episodes to get past chapter 1 and then covered the next 100 chapters in the remaining episodes?
Trigun's anime is mainly faulty in that there is hardly any sakuga or even well-animated action sequences. When you read an action scene in the manga, you can practically feel the adrenaline and suspense of the battles. Still, both works have their own approach to the moral question of kill-or-not-kill, so it's best for you to watch and read both.
