Last few episodes are anime original. It progresses the idol idea with Yoshio taking her to a small idol contest in the city. Machi has a panic attack on stage and runs off. She finds her courage, Yoshio spews some crap about her bneeding to be a sacrifice for the village like the first miko, and her dance impresses everyone and is good enough to merit a special award.

Instead of hearing the crowd cheering, she hallucinates that they're all booing and throwing rocks at her. When they get her back home she starts crying and saying she never wants to go to the city again and gives up on her dreams of going to school there with Natsu reinforcing this and she meantally breaks as Natsu tells her she doesn't need to do anything difficult again. Post ED scene is Machi reverted into a child-like mental state as she plays with Natsu. Happy and upbeat music is playing during all of this.

Scriptwriter of the episode deleted his Twitter and Facebook account. Also tried to remove the show from his Wikipedia page.

The author of the manga said in a blog post (that he later deleted) that he didn't check the scripts because he wanted to leave it to the professionals. He also said he didn't like Yoshio's original lines from the anime.

Nico's rating went from 90% to 60% and the last episode, to be streamed next Sunday, will go even lower.

The BD box didn't get any post-finale/pre-release boost, chances are that some people cancelled their reservations.

People are upset because Machi is the character you're supposed to empathize with the most and, not only did we see her fail and give up on her goal, none of the other characters are bothered by this (in fact, Natsu is delighted) and the show itself presents it as an ending we're supposed to feel good about.

That's actually pretty funny. I take it you're one of the retards who have been crying non-stop that the show didn't fulfill your "comfy" expectations? It's in line with the manga, the humor is supposed to be slightly mean-spirited, it's about Machi, her life, and how she can't deal with a lot of things, but it's all in gag form, she still gets on fine with her daily life. Maybe, maybe you could legitimately say that the anime didn't adapt that very well. But why worry about all that. Keep on being triggered by the ending.
>>
>>143139307
>maybe you could legitimately say that the anime didn't adapt that very well

Exactly.
>>
>>143139082
She has a nightmare in the manga where she goes to the city and people throw rocks at her. In the anime, Yoshio and Natsu manipulate her into participating in an idol contest in the city and her anxieties take over, making the nightmare a reality in this adaptation. Natsu goes to pray to the mountain god so she does good in the contest, but starts crying saying that what he really wants is for Machi to always be dependent on him so she can never leave the shrine.

During the contest, she starts having vivid hallucinations of people insulting her and throwing rocks at her. When she comes back she's traumatized from the experience and Natsu tells her it's OK, that she no longer needs to worry or think about anything anymore. The last we see of her is she acting like a 5 year old while happy music plays in the background. The mountain god granted Natsu's wish and she'll stay with him until he dies.

There's no issue with the episode at all per se. It's just the fact that they ended on it. If they had another episode or two where they would have shown her again engaging in her shenanigans, struggling with whatever, like it does in the manga, it would have been fine. But people seem to think that this somehow means that she's been "mind broken" for life or something. It's just an extended gag, the music should have been a dead give away.

So while I can say that I don't really think it was the best way to end the series, I don't think the episode itself was poorly done. And no, I can't understand all these people crying like she got burned at the stake or something.

Well, she can't. If it wasn't obvious enough, Natsu had been unknowingly sabotaging her attempts at becoming a city girl. He, of all bears, should have known to not shoved her out to the city for a task without any sort of preparation. He wanted her to fail, but he was lying to himself about that fact.

Seriously, Yoshio had her best interest at heart and has the excuse of not really knowing her crippling social anxiety since he's dense as fuck, Natsu does not. In short, bear wants loli and willing to do whatever it takes to keep her, even if it means locking her up in a proverbial bird cage.
>>
>>143139825
Why do people keep thinking its comfy fags complaining? Most of them left a while back. No one has been saying its bad because it wasn't comfy. We're saying its bad because they created an original ending that took things too far and it stopped being funny.

The ending wasn't so much an original as it was a different approach. Both basically had Machi back at the village in her ignorant ways. Manga might have kept it as a joke, it had also invalidate all the hard work she did in her dream to Sendai. Anime just played it straight, by both rewarding her effort with a trophy but amped up her social anxiety. It might seem cruel in the anime but remember, manga Machi didn't even try and her crippling social anxiety is still there.

The first signs this was going to be a crap adaptation were back when they swapped the parts hibiki first appears in.

In the manga, Machi has her freakout with Yoshio at the mall first. Seeing how self-concious she is of her clothes, he asks Hibiki to take her clothes shopping.

The anime reversed this and removes this characterizing moment for Yoshio, instead just sending her randomly shopping.
>>
Anyone that defends the ending by saying that it's stupid to assume that you can overcome social anxiety through sheer willpower, or that it's okay to not only completely give up but regress to a worse state than your initial one, is a fucking retard.

There are good endings where the protagonist realizes that his goals are futile and ends up starting right back at square one. This isn't one of them.

So my peeps! This is great news indeed.
>>
>>143140445
Considering Kumamiko isn't a black comedy, I don't see why anyone would want that.
>>
>>143140292
It's a bad ending, but nevertheless, it is an effective one. Had it been the generic 'it was a dream' or 'she finally overcame her anxiety' ending, people would have forgotten all about this anime within a season. Now, we get people talking about this for a while and get them to realize just how crippling social anxiety really is. It is not something that can overcome with willpower nor can it be cure in one shot. It takes years of dedication, a lot of support from friends and family, and acknowledgment that this is a real issue that needs to be tackled. It might have ruined the whole comedy aspect, but it damn well made you mad enough to acknowledge this problem and not forget it when you switch over to next anime.
>>
>>143140527
It's effective only because it was awfully done, not because it hits you.
>>
>>143140527
They could have made her anxiety lessened, not cured or something along those lines. Basically the whole premise that the show was leading up to was a complete waste of time.
>>
>>143140527
>Had it been the generic 'it was a dream' or 'she finally overcame her anxiety' ending

Or they could have just ended it with stand alone episodes adapted from the manga.

You're reading way too much into the ending.
>>
>>143140527
That would only be true if it was well portrayed or even their intent. People aren't going to remember it for how serious social anxiety is, they're going to remember it for how terrible the ending itself was and the writer trying to do damage control.

Which would have lessen the impact. Social anxiety isn't something to be laughed at. I mean, who here actually takes Tomoko's social anxiety seriously anymore? Everyone now treats Watamote as a yuri-harem romcom. The real and very depressing issue of her society anxiety isn't even an issue anymore.
>>
>>143140527

Are you listening to yourself right now? Open people's eyes to social anxiety? Jesus fucking Christ those two 1500~ posts Futaba threads didn't even remotely mention how they were suddenly giving a fuck about a disorder like that. They were just lewding Machi, making jokes about the shit ending, and shitting at how badly done the anime original bad end was.

Get over yourself.
>>
>>143140658
I know right? He should have scolded her so that her anxiety would flair up and then the end could have been her curled up in a ball crying!
>>
>>143140680
But you were supposed to laugh at Machi, they simply fucked up.
>>

>this is a SERIOUS anime with a SERIOUS message
>>
>>143140680
Wow you just triggered like half of the posters in this thread, well done.
>>
>>143140684
Right, which is what I had said. Bad ending, but an effective one. No one would have still been talking about it had it went with the manga ending &/or solved her anxiety problem ending.
>>
>>143140680
I hope you realize that the ending was actually supposed to be funny. In fact, both Machi's and Tomoko's conditions are always played off for laughs.

You're taking this shit too seriously. They just botched up the fucking ending that's all there is to it.
>>
>>143140680
The focus of the anime or even the purpose of those scenes was not to show how serious social anxiety is. Machi freaking out was supposed to be part of the humor and they failed at it. You are reading way too deeply into this.
>>
>>143140769
No, you said it would make people aware of social anxiety.

It didn't.
>>
>>143140727
It made full use of its medium to deliver a message. I hate it because it's no longer a comedy but I do have to give it respect to get people talking about an actual real life problem.
>>
>>143140680
>The real and very depressing issue of her society anxiety isn't even an issue anymore.
Was it ever? Pretty sure the appeal was "hey look, it's /a/ as a girl."
>>
>>143140804
Except they tried to play off the anime original episodes as comedy.
>>
>>143140680
No one needs to treat Watamote seriously because it didn't teach anyone anything. The whole reason it became popular was because anons saw part of themselves in Tomoko, so they already knew what it was like.

Just like half of the reactions to the episode when Machi had to work at the supermarket were of people relating to the experience.
>>
>>143140778
It honestly stopped being funny back during Machi's visit to the mall. I don't think I laughed during those social anxiety panic attack moments. It was incredibly depressing.
>>
Holy shit what is even going on in this anymore?
>>
>>143140804
It never stopped being a comedy though. It just became a really poorly done one.
>>
>>143140861
Some retard trying to play off the writer of the last episode as the next Stanley Kubrick.
>>
>>143140803
People are still talking about it after the anime has ended. And let's be honest here, can you actually forget this ending a few months from now?
>>
>>143140861
An anon is either leading everyone on with easy bait or is actually fucked in the head. I can't figure out which at this point.
>>
>>143140889
Yes, I probably could. But even if I couldn't, being remembered for being bad is hardly a positive thing unless it's one of those "so funny it's bad" shows. This is not one of them.
>>
>>143140889
So it's supposed to be a good thing? Like those pop stars that did all kinds of fucked up shit just to get their face on the paper?
>>
>>143140886
Not even saying it was deep. I'm saying they just played her social anxiety straight instead of laughing it off like in the manga.
>>
>you like the ending because bullying mind break fetish is satisfied
Doujins when
>>
>>143140889
>People are still talking about it after the anime has ended
Yes but people aren't talking about social anxiety or whatever the fuck you're on about.

They're just talking about how shit the ending is.
>>
If they wanted to deliver an important message about mental health they would come out and say it, not act like they fucked up and have the scriptwriter delete his accounts. Their actions are proof that that wasn't their intention at all and they simply botched the tone of the episode. If only they had been smarter about it they could have used your excuse and taken the high road, but they failed to do that too.
>>
>>143140889
It hasn't even been a week since it ended and the new season hasn't started yet. Of course people are still discussing it. In a week nobody will give a rats ass about it.
>>
>>143140940
Well, yeah. Good or bad, getting people to remember something is incredibly hard. Think back on how many anime you have watched and how many of them you actually remembered?
>>
>>143140941
Don't even waste your time anon, they don't want to understand what you are saying. They see shit in black or white and are unable to see when something is a bit of both.

The show was shit the last episode at least stuck to its guns and should be respected for that.
>>
Holy shit Yoshio is a retard. How hard is it to get that Machi doesn't want that idol shit. I even liked him at first but he overdid it with this shitty village publicity stuff.
>>
This would be the perfect setting for a girl management h-game honestly.

Machi would have different stats and depending on those stats and certain decisions you make throughout the game, there'd be a fuckton of possible endings to get which obviously are mostly bad ends.
>>
>>143140889
People are talking about the ending, they are not talking about social anxiety. Nobody gives a shit about that. You can fuck off to tumblr if you want to blabber on about how "important" the Kumamiko ending is and how it bravely tackles real-life social issues or whatever.
>>
>>143141005

>>
>>143141005

Off yourself.
>>
>>143140955
Right, which is my point. There's really no way you can't tall about how shit the ending is without talking about how they dealt with her social anxiety. It has a bad ending, but it was effective. They got you to remember it. Everytime you think of loli miko, you wil remember how they ruined the ending by her being unable to overcome her problem.
>>
I don't want her to get over her anxiety, that's too much but leaving no hope and leaving her as an empty shell is what's so disgusting.

They just went along with her delusions.
>>
>>143140628
Nobody is going to talk about it except you. Most people will either laugh or say it was shitty and unfunny.
>>
What went wrong?
>>
>>143141105
What makes you think she has no hope? The day after a traumatic event she does not want to go to the city anymore ... she could change her mind in a week for all we know.
>>
>>143141094
No, your point was how this shitty ending somehow will spread the knowledge of social anxiety. But it failed at that too.
>>

>>
>>143141159
Natsu will do his best to not let her get better.
>>
>>143141105
Like I posted above, that's just an issue with the fact that this was the last episode. It's supposed to be just be a large gag, hence the music, etc. If they had one more episode after this showing her doing her usual stuff, struggling with her usual things, nobody would have said anything. But for some reason people can't get that, and seem to think she's just broken for life.

I'm pretty sure only contrarian shitters were strawmanning with that argument. The story would end if Machi became a normal girl, it's like wanting Yotsuba to grow up. Most people just expected things to stay the same, as expected from a gag manga.
>>
>>143141172
But it's happening already. After all, you can't tell me how shit the ending is without telling why it's shit. Because they failed to make her social anxiety into a joke like the manga did. Face it, whether you like it or not, you are now forced to remember Machi as a failed child with severe mental issues.
>>

They basically fucked up the humor hard.

>>
>>143141361
But it is. Watch, when the next thread pops up, it will be filled with nothing but shitposting about the ending. Someone will ask why is it so bad, and someone will inevitably talk about her mental issue. It's going to happen, whether you want it to or not.

What this guy said >>143141334
They're talking about all the shit that happened with the mangaka posting on his blog as well as the scripwriter deleting his accounts.
Then there's this big discussion over shit adaptations, other shows which had just as big negative backlash, and they even mentioned us.

And no before you even start autist-kun, there's only a handful of posts in that 3000~ post thread which talk about 'social anxiety' and even then nobody gives a fuck too much about it. They're all talking about the implications of staff fucking with the source material.

>expected things to stay the same

Again, why are people acting like none of what you said happened? The whole fucking end of the episode was a gag, she's exactly like she was to begin with. I guarantee if there was another episode, she would wake up perfectly fine, and have some other issues to deal with at the village. And then in a week or two, she would decide to try to go to the city again. Her "breaking" is supposed to be a fucking joke, why is that so hard to see.
>>
I wish I knew what they were thinking with the ending, what was their logic behind it.

So its actually exactly the same as us, just on a larger scale.
>>
>>143141468
Actually, Japan talked a lot about Machi getting into Kamille at the end of Zeta.
>>
>>143141193
But it was the last episode, maybe it's you who doesn't understand that once a story ends there's an expectation of continuity within that world. No one watches a story where the hero saves the day and thinks "well, after that he probably fell down the stairs and became a tetraplegic", because it is assumed that the story ends when all the important events relating to it have taken place. You would think that someone who writes scripts professionally knows this, and would end the series in a way that shows that things remain the same. Maybe the scene with Machi and Natsu playing was intended to show that, but if that's the case he obviously failed.
>>
>>143141517
