I cringed pretty hard this ep about nobody seeming to understand how empathy works... In the last thread it was mentioned that Japanese society is pretty low on empathy but still it's a biological property of mammals, it's not like they would be so fucking shocked by the fact it exists even if it was repressed. I knew empathy was the endgame of kizuna system, it's just that I also expected the characters themselves to know it.

Tbh, I am quite frustrated that the show wasn't more about the Kiznaiver system and less about the characters. Don't get me wrong, they were nice and awesome and all, but the whole Kizna thing just feels underdeveloped and to it is full of plot holes. They have one episode to make amends, good fucking luck with that.
I would probably have watched it if it was 2-cour, and they could have done so much more. Really sad they didn't. Now the show will just leave a sour taste in my mouth, I am sure.

That's more of a typical anime formula
It's common for shows with big funding to have these elaborate, designed-by-committee settings and scenarios with no real concrete ending or direction planned and then bring on a bigshot writer whose name is valuable but doesn't actually know how to write around that scenario. Okada is just the most recent fad, but she stands out just because of how exceptionally bad at it she is. Give her a show about mentally linking pain in an artificial city built to cover unethical human experimentation and she writes a story about a lesbian who's angsting over the loss of a friend (nothing to do with the setting or premise) and a couple teenagers who angst privately over unrequited love and childish crushes (nothing to do with the setting or premise).
It boggles the mind.
when I saw them being surprised at their own empathy I didn't quite see it as them not knowing what empathy is, more that they were physically and psychology conditioned to feel emotional and physical responses a majority of the time because of someone else and because of the kiznaiver system. so when they felt an exactly similar feeling they rightfully assumed the kiznaiver system was still activated (they were told it was gone, but it clearly wasn't for katsuhira, so still aren't sure it's actually gone). the way they shoehorned in an explanation of empathy and how they were still confused after being told it was their own feelings is just bad writing but the whole scene made a little sense.

It makes sense if you think about how literally every character they chose didn't have any real connections with their classmates or went through an accident that fucked their sense of empathy up.
True friendship is rare enough to believe that someone could forget/not know how you can trully feel bad for seeing one of your close friends in pain.
It's a good touch to a series that is meant to show that yes, becoming friends with someone can sometimes be hard, painful and overall a bit of a nuisance, but it's worth the try.
