God-guy was a Tachibana labs engineer who became disgruntled and quit, then committed suicide to "join" the Wired and become God. he was super smart but he wasn't actually God, though he did have a number of followers (the Knights). so he enlisted these followers to seek out Lain and join him because he foolishly believed his power matched hers and she was just some child prodigy. but she is actually God.
