Most of the hate it gets is because people new to anime tend (or tended, it's somewhat died down) to treat it as the greatest show of all time that's so mature and intellectual etc. It got to the point where 'liking Death Note' was basically synonymous with 'complete weeaboo'.
In reality it's a good show, though it does have it's flaws, and parts where it just drags way too long. If you can enjoy it for its own merits, and don't expect too much from it, it's absolutely worth watching.
